Everything on my computer is gone!!!!!!

I got an update with all brand new Bing, Microsoft Edge, etc. And everything else is wiped out. It's like it's when I first took it out of the box. This tablet was a pain before this happened, and now I'd love to see this effing thing burning in a fireplace. Any ideas how to get all my stuff back? And bare in mind I'm not all that swift with computer stuff.

What type of tablet, phone do you have?
Are you connected to iCloud ?

Buy an Apple computer or tablet. Seriously. I cannot go into all the ways that Microsoft designs have failed businesses and people over the years, but it's a lot. No computer is 100% safe or trouble free, but Apple has always been more reliable, IMO. That's part of why they are still going strong against their less expensive PC and Windows competitors.

Apple is also one of the only computer-makers where you can call them and get help with technical problems from a human being . Real humans. What a brave and bold concept!

Probably the first thing to do and easiest, is to restore to an earlier date before the changes were made, see how in the link.
System Restore

. I was about to trash this piece of..... when I turned it on and it was back to normal. Normal meaning it's slow, and freezing every two minutes. Don't ever buy a Microsoft Surface Go 3. Sucks. I wanted a back up for my desk top. If I would have gotten my iPhone first, I never would have gotten that worthless pile of,,,,,,,
Thanks for the hints and links.
Glad it’s working now for you.
How frustrating that must have been.
Can you copy all you have onto a stick in case it happens again?

With an iPad, you back everything up either to the iCloud, or to your Mac computer (if you have one), or to both. Even if something happens that completely destroys the iPad, everything is safe in the cloud, and you just get another device.
If you can move everything important (pictures, etc) from the Surface tablet to save it in the cloud, then when you get a different tablet, you can download it.
As an example, save photos to a place like google photos or Amazon photos, which can be installed on any brand of tablet or laptop. Then you never have to worry about losing them.

To be honest, I don't know how to do a lot of that stuff.
Okay. But you can learn. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of whatever happens.

For instance, you can always search for "what is a USB stick" and "how to use a USB stick" and start learning from there. Then you can start to protect your computer contents.

Agree wholeheartedly.
I’m not computer savvy either fuzzy so can relate. Whenever I have problems, my husband comes to my aid but I have iPhone.
I’d think the basic info for how to use a USB is generalized. If not I’m sure somebody on this site can help you.

Go to system, reset, save your files and reset. You will lose some peripherals and those passwords. just put them back in.
It will also speed up the fellow cause its sort of a mess when you need a reset. Some times our stuff just needs a restart.
Shutting them off doesn't fix them when a restart will resort the stuff. Especially our phones. I found going to 5G a real
pita.

An off-topic question. Is FuzzyBuddy 2 (new member) the same person as FuzzyBuddy SF VIP? If so why? Why new member and VIP at the same time?
It is the same person, but when he lost everything from his Surface, he probably had to make a new account here just to be able to post in the forum. The story has continuity, so it is definitely the same person, but was unable to use his main account when the tablet was messed up.

Which is a total shame. Fuzzybuddy has been here for a long time. Maybe @Matrix can transfer accounts or something. It’s worth asking about. Poor fuzzybuddy

He is back to using the main account again now that the tablet is working right. It was just one post that he had to use the second account, so nothing has been lost from his main account, @PeppermintPatty .
Thanks Happyflowerlady. I should have looked at the times instead of looking at introductions.

You are one member I knew could probably help. Good stuff. I’m glad he didn’t need to make a new account.

What deb said. I do complete backups of our computers monthly. Have almost never needed to use them (over at least 10 years), but when I did, they were a real time and money saver.

well I just took a big chance and put a usb stick in this desktop
then "copied" both word and excel to the stick, hope it works,
cause i need them on my new laptop......fingers crossed!@!!!!!

Interesting to read this thread! An upgrade messed me up yesterday, too... needed to do a full scan and that took over FIVE HOURS. :cautious: I have all my passwords written down (on paper the old fashioned way just in case something like this would happen) but was prepared to have to become "CallMeKate2" if things had been too messed up to fix. Still working on getting everything back to normal, but I've had to log in to *everything* again when I didn't have to before.
