Evolution and types of women in advertising

I saw a show tonight that talked about how advertising is going to be changing more to represent all types of females including small, large, old, young, and in between. I think this is a good step forward especially so that girls don't have to think they have to fit into stereotype images of women or be "perfect." It's about time we can be ourselves and relax I say! I have seen some of the changes already and am anxious to see more like women who represent me.

Not sure if I saw the same thing, I saw a segment on a show that Sports Illustrated is using more "real" looking models, and not the starving little waifs.

I remember when you would look in the "plus size" section of the Penneys catalog and it would just show regular models with the dresses pinned up so they looked like they fit. They would never show a heavy woman. Never.
Thank God they are showing what WE really look like now. We all deserve to be represented. We all are attractive.:eek:nthego:

I agree with all of you. But being a man, I have to say that the average man is not represented in many commercials and other advertisements either. Just sayin. LOL

There's not a lot of "reality" in advertising.

I've been looking at cruise advertisements as my sister and I might go on a cruise this year sometime. According to the cruise advertisements, there are only handsome people who sail......fine looking families with two beautiful smiling children, well-behaved of course, distinguished silver-haired older couples, professional younger folks who are obviously lawyers and accountants and medical professionals. There are no bubbas in wife-beater shirts and bib overalls, ladies wearing daisy dukes who have no business wearing daisy dukes, harried families dragging over-stimulated children by the arms, no elderly people in golf-car-sized hoverrounds, and very few gay or lesbian couples. Reality? Bah! We don' need no steenkin' reality!

Advertising does not represent reality - it represents some sought after ideal. The people they use fit that model. Example - if I am in the market for a car, why would I want one that can spin around in circles in the desert?? (I'm sure not going to do that) If I want a beer, must it be brought by a bunch of very large horses? - and I bet they smell a bit non-conducive to to drinking.

Anyone offended by good looking people might want to look inward, not outward.

Oh those horses would smell and to me that is heavenly:eek:. I used to stand beside Sierra and bury my face in her furry neck and inhale deeply! Oh my goodness I loved her and the smell of her. And then she would turn her head around to me and nuzzle my neck and we would have such a moment! (mind you, I'm pretty sure she was more interested in the salted peanuts in my pocket :playful:but that's okay, I was happy to take whatever I could get.)

I think only 'horsey-girls' could understand:rolleyes:. Providing they haven't just had a roll in a nice wet pile, there's something about the smell of a horse to a 'girl' that's just perfume. But even without sniffing the horse, you can still enjoy your Sierra Nevada Brown Ale. By the way, that's quite a mouthful to order isn't it? What do you call it for short? "Give me a Sierra Brown"? Or just "give me a beer" and that's what you get? You know, I haven't tasted a beer in 35 years! Not that I'm an alcoholic and 'on the wagon', just quit and never looked back.

Sorry, got a little off topic so back to the size of people in advertising......:)

I say, "Wadda ya got on draft". When they get there I say, "I'll take it (maybe even two)".

Sorry, I'm still hung up on the beer. Trying to erase the thought of hugging the horse after it's been rolling in "a nice wet pile" (of?).

It doesn't bother me what kind of men or women they use in advertising I think for a long time I've been seeing all ages, shapes and sizes. I'm over 60 an a little bit overweight but I wouldn't care if they didn't want to use someone like me to advertise their products on television, I'd completely understand

I watch Youtube a lot. Now and then it morphs into other topics if you just leave it alone while you're doing things and just leave it on in the background.

One day, I suddenly saw this plus-sized woman modeling various plus sized dresses and outfits. She was very big and also very pretty.

She posed and twirled, smiled and gestured and you could tell she was a professional model. She spoke knowledgeably about the fabrics, cuts, seaming, prices, washability- all the things women want to know about garments with bits of added info as to function for large women.

She also had a sense of humor and nice personality, so- big gals are on their way to fashion and style on TV.

About time.

I think if they are advertising plus sized cloths they should have plus sized models. Lots of nice looking ones out there.

I watch youtube morph on, too. I'm glad more realistic images are being shown including old people.:love_heart:
