Extradition

If a foreign national living in the US ran over somebody in their car and killed them, then fled the country, would American people expect that person to be extradited back to the US to face charges in court?

It seems like the right thing to do.

If there is some concern over fairness in the jurisdiction where the accident occurred then I think that the two governments could cooperate and arrange a televised interview/trial to determine exactly what happened and then collaborate on a sentence if appropriate to be served in this country.

I don't think that it is fair or just for this to be swept under the carpet.

We've had worse things happen, including violent rapes performed by family members of diplomats, among many other crimes. No, I would not expect any retribution other than deportation, because that's the way it is, which is not always the way I want it to be.

Unfortunately, not everyone is treated alike when it comes to the laws of any nation. Extradition is no exception. Whether it is due to political influence, or wealth, extradition is a human process, so anything is possible. From what I've seen in the newspapers, which is not much, I think extradition is used more as a nation's bargaining chip, than a way to secure someone to answer in court.

Deportation is letting the person get away with the crime, extradition is the only just option. It always angers me when diplomats are allowed to get away with rape and murder, even THAT law should be changed.

If there is an extradition treaty with that nation, they can be extradited back to the U.S. to face the charges. If there isn't, then the U.S. is at that country's mercy to do the right thing.
