i had lasik surgery done last year and have been using systane--- it helps just for a short time. my eyes really get dry--does anyone use a better one or know of a better one?

My optometrist recommended "Refresh." I have severe dry eyes but it's the worst in the morning when I wake up. On windy or low humidity days, I need to use more of it. Some brands have thicker products for severe dry eyes - you might try one of those. My eye doc specifically said to avoid "Visine Tears" or "Visine Dry Eye."

I also use Refresh Optive Gel Drops on my ophthalmologist's recommendation. I think they're on the expensive side but they do seem to work.

As win231 suggested, Refresh is an excellent brand of eye drops to use. They were recommended to me decades ago by my mother in law, whose eye doctor recommended them to her. I generally was using Refresh Tears, which is the thinnest of the formulas.

Next, a little bit thicker and a little more expensive is Refresh Optive. The thickest and most comforting was recommended here to me by Ike, and that one is Refresh Optive Advanced, most expensive but worth it if you have bad trouble with dry eye. Here's a picture of the package I copied from his post.

My wife uses Restasis, but I think she gets a prescription to be able to buy them.

I read something interesting about dry eyes. The term "Dry Eyes" is an oversimplification because the problem is not simply not enough tears.

Tears are composed of three things: Water, Salt & Oil. When we have dry eyes, it's an imbalance of one of those three ingredients - & it can be not enough of one of them or too much of another. In my case, I produce too much oil & not enough water. That's what causes blurred vision with one blink & clear vision with another blink, etc.

And we need to be cautious about following whatever our eye doctor says. I saw an eye doctor who tried to talk me into a surgical procedure that re-routes the tear duct to the top of the eyelid. He said "It's a minor surgery & will cure your dry eye problem for good." He became angry when I said I'd have to think about it.
Another eye doctor I saw for another opinion said that would be the worst thing I could do; it would not solve my particular problem & would likely make it much worse.

In the winter my eyes water when I'm outside in the cold.

My eye guy says that it is due to dry eyes and he always gives me a sample of Soothe XP.

I've never used it, I figure the tears work just as well and don't cost nearly as much. :):playful::eek:nthego:

Don't even mention the brand "Visine" to my OD or surgeon that done both of my eyes (laser cataract surgery). All we use now is Systane Ultra.

You can put money on the fact that the eye doc knows nothing about homeopathic medicine. It's saving my eyes from his cataract surgery and his lifestyle for the assembly lines of these surgeries..

After trying several brands of dry eye drops, all which made my eyes feel like they were on fire, every time I used them. So while searching for a new dry eye product at Walmart, an older gentleman suggested I try the brand he used, thera tears. I took his suggestion & I've been using thera tears for nearly a year with no problem.

Sounds good. I am using a product called Thera Lid for cleaning the eyelids.

I found out that putting drops in your eye can cause lid problems if the tip of the bottle touches the eyelid.

My eyelids infect easily.

Yes, you aren't supposed to let anything touch the dropper or the inside of the cap; it can contaminate the solution. When I use eye drops, I'll rest my hand on my other hand to keep the bottle steady & also to keep the bottle the right distance from my eye.

I also have chronic dry eye syndrome. I don’t produce much tears anymore and my tears are of low quality. I was recommended Sooth preservative free eye drops. They come in little plastic vials. Work great. Then I use the XP ones before bed.
