I remember talk about this many years ago, but it's finally been banned. I know it will affect many foods, drinks, and medications. Any thoughts on the major things it will affect?

We banned it in the UK in 1994 ( 30 years ago ).... ( 1990 for cosmetics)

the US has 2 years to completely removed Red 3 from products... but Red 40..aka E129 - Allura Red AC which is still under suspicion is not banned but everything that has it in it must carry a warning.. because it adversely affects some people, especially the behavior of children, and is a known carcinogen...found in many things including cosmetics and drinks.. especially in Cherry Coke..

Siegel said he believes the FDA's decision could be tied to the incoming new head of the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

"They knew it would have happened anyway under RFK Jr.," he said. "It is already banned or severely restricted in Australia, Japan and the European Union."

It makes me wonder about the impartiality of FDA ....
since it was banned in cosmetic many years ago in the 90's was not safe to be absorbed in skin but OK to ingest....

it shows the food lobby etc has too much sway.

I've wondered for at least 40 years if it would ever be banned. We knew about this when I was in my 30s. The FDA must have just heard about it.

I remember the red dye thing way back then, too. I had a child that was very "active". Tried removing all additives from her diet and it didn't change a thing. She's now 50 and is still that way, lol.

It's just the deep state trying to control us. If I want Red Dye #3 in my food, why shouldn't I be able to have it? Who is the government to tell us what number dies we can ingest?

Like the old saying goes...
First they came for Red Dye #3 and I did not speak out, because I was not Red Dye #3...

Wait a minute...
I sort of agree with this, although it is sometimes difficult to know exactly what has been added to our food, and the effects. How much intervention should the government enact? Should fentanyl, heroine, et.al., be readily available to all? Would you see little packets of the stuff on the shelves next to the checkout, along with all the candy?

It is, however, my choice NOT to buy certain things. If everybody did that, the additives would stop (at least, in theory).

I want one thing: reliable, real science based information so I can make my own choices. Good luck with that.

Maybe they can come up with a safe alternative to keep foods attractive enough to be desirable. I imagine red coloring is added to cherry pie filling and other such foods. It's my understanding that red dye #40 is still in use, but - as ChiroDoc pointed out, some studies show all artificial colorings lined to ADHD.

I’m not sure what to make of the change.

I saw a news clip that indicated excessive amounts of red dye #3 was harmful to rodents but no proof or link that it caused problems in humans.

The clip went on to say that red dye #3 won’t be completely phased out until 2027.

IMO it makes sense to eliminate it if it is only decorative but it doesn’t sound like a serious threat.

Enjoy your red velvet cake while you still can!

When my oldest son was just a toddler, his pediatrician diagnosed him with hyperkinesis (hyper = excess, and kinetic = movement). This was well before the labels ADD and ADHD.

Anyway, the pediatrician told me to avoid giving Grant any food with red dye in it (and limit sugar). So this was a known issue nearly 50 years ago.

But Grant was born with attention deficit-hyperactivity. Problems showed up before he ate solid food, so maybe his tiny developing brain was effected by his mother's daily cravings for cherry Jello and strawberry soda while she was pregnant. I'd pick that stuff up for her on my way home from work, and stock up when I bought groceries.

Shelly didn't eat or drink anything containing red dye while she was pregnant with Liam and Maud, and they've never had the problems that Grant did. (and still does, but he learned to manage it really well)
