FDA recommends pause of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after blood clot cases

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending a pause in the rollout of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine after several instances of severe blood clots in recipients.

According to the FDA, there have been six reported cases of the rare and severe type of blood clot in over 6.8 million Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine recipients.

"Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare," the agency said on Twitter. "Treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered. CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance. FDA will review that analysis as it also investigates these cases."

However, until that review is completed, the FDA is "recommending this pause."

In a statement provided to Fox News, Johnson & Johnson said the "safety and well-being of people who use our products" remains the company's number one priority, and that it was aware of an "extremely rare disorder involving people with blood clots in combination with low platelets in a small number of individuals who have received our COVID-19 vaccine."

The company said that it has been "reviewing these cases with European health authorities," and that it had "made the decision to proactively delay the rollout of our vaccine in Europe." Additionally, the company said it has been working closely with medical experts and health authorities "and we strongly support the open communication of this information to healthcare professionals and the public."

In a statement posted to the agency's website, the FDA said the type of blood clot is called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and that it was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets. All six cases involved women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred between six and 13 days post-vaccination.

The FDA said the pause in rollout would also "ensure that the health care provider community is aware of the potential for these adverse events and can plan due to the unique treatment required with this type of blood clot."

Johnson & Johnson had told the White House it would deliver 100 million doses of vaccine by the end of May, but faced a recent production blunder at a Baltimore plant and saw several mass sites shut down early over the last week due to potential adverse reactions.

In Georgia, eight people experienced lightheadedness, but officials could not rule out whether heat was a factor. In North Carolina, four people were taken to the hospital for reactions "consistent with known common side effects." In Iowa, three people experienced extreme lightheadedness, and in Colorado 11 people experienced dizziness and nausea.

6 cases in 6.8 million vaccinations.....that's odds of less than 1 in a million. I wonder how that would compare to Not getting vaccinated, and getting the virus. I suppose there have also been some people who have had problems after getting vaccinated with the other brands, but that is likely to be expected. Virtually EVERY drug or vaccination carries some degree of risk....just listen to all the disclaimers on the TV "ask your doctor" ads.

Personally, we would rather get the vaccine, and reduce our risks of getting sick, and start returning to a normal routine, than sitting around stressing out about this pandemic.

We got the Moderna vaccine about a month ago, and outside of a few hours of very minor shoulder pain, it went well. We're now doing pretty much everything we used to do....and just wearing a mask, etc., when needed.

How many cases of problems have there been with Moderna and Pfizer and did they pause the use of them? If not, why not? To wit:

Severe allergy-like reactions in at least eight people who received the COVID-19 vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTech over the past 2 weeks may be due to a compound in the packaging of the messenger RNA (mRNA) that forms the vaccine’s main ingredient, scientists say. A similar mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna, which was authorized for emergency use in the United States on Friday, also contains the compound, polyethylene glycol (PEG). Source: Science.

Another interesting question is, "What types of people with health problems were excluded from each company's vaccine trials?"

The F.D.A. recommends that people who have received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine within the past three weeks should contact their doctors if they experience severe headaches, abdominal pain, leg pain or shortness of breath. People should not be concerned about mild headaches and flu-like symptoms in the first few days after vaccination. Those are common, harmless side effects brought on by the immune system’s production of a defense against the coronavirus.

Federal officials are concerned that doctors may not be trained to look for the rare disorder if recipients of the vaccine develop symptoms of it. The federal health agencies said Tuesday morning that “treatment of this specific type of blood clot is different from the treatment that might typically be administered” for blood clots.

“Usually, an anticoagulant drug called heparin is used to treat blood clots. In this setting, administration of heparin may be dangerous, and alternative treatments need to be given,” the statement said.

After the grossly-exaggerated infection & death rates, I wouldn't trust their numbers about bad side effects.

I agree. We got our Moderna shots. Today we started getting our trailer ready to go out camping for the first time in a year. We go with friends and haven't felt safe but now that we are vaccinated and they are too, we are ready to roll again.

Just curious...do you have a reputable source claiming these numbers are "grossly-exaggerated"???? Is the Media, all over the world, releasing false data regarding the severity of this virus?? Or...are you basing your "opinions" on some grocery store tabloid?

At the heart of the issue is methods CDC used in counting things like cases and deaths. We know NCHS released Covid-19 Alert No. 2 which changed the way deaths with connections to Covid 19 were reported and tabulated. The revealing line in the alert is in the last paragraph: “Covid-19 should be reported on the death certificates for all decedents where the disease caused or is assumed to have caused or contributed to death.” . Looking at the absence of general flu stats, it doesn't take much of a leap to conclude there's a very high probably they're fudging all kinds of numbers.

I trust you know there's gigantic amount of money to be made and shared in all of this and guess who gets greased. If people think that doesn't happen, well, good luck to them.

I'm basing it on shreds of paper that originated from another planet & fell from the sky.

I'm sure that the numbers being reported are Not 100% accurate....as it might take a full autopsy to truly reveal the cause for a person's death. And, with the way hospitals are being pushed to their limits, the doctors often have to make their "best guess"....and when they are having to deal with several patients, even their "expertise" might be wrong. At any rate, this is a global situation, and as quickly as it hit, and the "learning curve" the entire world is having to contend with, I discount any "opinions" about this all being a hoax, etc.
