Finding a place to rent is nigh on impossible

Perth is a city of 2,118,000 people.
The were 882,372 homes in Perth last year.
Of these there are only 2,179 homes available for rent.
I wonder how those who are successful in gaining a new rental do it?
Do they offer more than the asking price?
Do they pay 6/12 months in advance?
I have been in my rental for eight and a half years now. How can I move? What are the chances of me being a successful applicant?
I am not saying I am being evicted or want to move but what would happen if I was evicted for what ever reason?
What is the rental situation where you live?
Plenty of rental stock? Or are there one hundred plus applicant for each new rental when it come onto the market?

Absolutely terrible. Landlords are taking advantage knowing that people will accept anything just so they have a roof over their heads.

If you were really serious, I’d start with a property management company. They’ll vet your application. When a place would be listed, the landlord would ask folks to send very detailed applications with way too much info required. Who know who is really behind a ‘rental’. It could be a scam to get your info. Especially scary for women.

Totally agree that many landlords have become money hungry, seeing an opportunity to fleece the public.
There was one Rental Agency principle who advised landlords to evict current tenants so they could raise the rent by what ever amount they wanted.
Despicable.
There are Rental Agencies who tell the owners of the rental properties they manage that they will raise the rents by 10% whether the landlord wants to or not.
Higher rents means higher cut the the agency.
Despicable in the extreme.

I saw an ad yesterday for an apartment here in town. It's in an old house that's been converted to studio apartments. Less than 300 square feet. It has a tiny refrigerator, a tiny sink, a 2-burner stove and a microwave (not even a convection/micro combination), a tiny bathroom. No utilities are included. There's a non-refundable $70 application fee AND, here's a new one: you have to pay a service fee to some unnamed company to "verify" that you don't have any pets. Apparently, they're not taking your word for it. I'm not sure exactly how something can be "verified" that doesn't exist, but who knows. And you are required to make 3X the rent monthly (net, not gross, as stated clearly). This is not in a particularly ritzy neighborhood, either.

And for this treasure, you will pay $1600 a month. First, last and security deposit.

Cripes. I'm glad I don't have to look for an apartment anytime soon. It's just re-dik-you-luss!

Really despicable.
I would like to have some of these landlords charged for being arseholes.

Finding any type of rental where we live is very difficult right now. There’s nothing available and landlords know that and ARE hiking up the rent.

My in-laws are getting older now. She no longer is properly mobile and needs a wheelchair and considerable help moving and he’s the only one available to help. Unfortunately he’s 5 years older and has his own health issues.

They’ve rented part of this house for about 10 years now and the landlord has always been grateful to have them renting but lately they have felt the tables have turned. It seems as though the landlord now wants to evict them so he can get new, younger renters in and raise the rent. So much for loyalty. I really feel for them. My father in law is really a sweet guy.

I can't believe the rents around here. Most of the properties are "used" to put it mildly, but the rents are really steep. I used to live in NYC, what I paid in rent for the whole year is what leasing a space in a parking garage costs for the month. I can't afford to live in NYC, now.
