Fire Fighter Flunks Modified Physical Exam, Injured 10 Days Into Job,

A NYC fire fighter was injured 10 days into the job after failing the actual physical exam but was allowed to take a modified test instead. This hire was part of an old discrimination lawsuit from 1999-2000 in which the NYC now gives specified applicants priority.

It took 3 attempts to get through the fire academy. Test modifications included things like taking part of the aerobic test on a stair master and not the more realistic conditions/courses others passed.

"Preference" should mean first chance to attend the fire academy, not pass it or get pushed through. Sometimes the job is the job, nothing more, nothing less. Fate does not customize conditions in emergency situations.

Also regardless of the past, sometimes TIME itself takes one out of the picture. 40 isn't too old but we're not talking about spring chickens here either. The department would be better off offering lump sum settlements to certain people if they were one of the ones passed over. I have no problem making them a priority hire but like any hire, applicant or cadet if they fail they should be a no go. This is about a chance, not a guarantee.
