First Foot Through The Door at New Year

This is a Scottish tradition to bring good health and
good luck to the family of the house.

The first foot should be tall dark and handsome and
carrying a lump of coal, or a drink, of whisky preferably.

I have often wondered if the tradition is carried out in
other place beside Scotland and the North of England,
plus the Isle of Man.

Places, where there are a lot of Scottish immigrants, like
Australia, Canada, New Zealand and of course the USA.

Do any of you who live in these countries ever hear of it
happening in your country?

Mike.

No, not me. If you're tall dark and handsome, come on over 🤪

when we were kids.. if we weren't going to a family party as we usually did.. ( large extended family)... and staying home.. to ensure that the first person over the doorstep after midnight was male, and not female which would have brought bad luck.. my brother would climb out of the window at precisely midnight and be allowed over the threshold just after the bells had rung...

Our tradition (Greek) is similar. We also have a male to be the first to step in with the right foot (for good luck). We also have an icon and a jar of honey for a blessing and the year to be sweet. I love these traditions! :)
