Just been watching 'Trawlermen' on TV. One boat featured was a pelagic trawler out hunting mackerel in the N.Atlantic off the Shetland islands. On the bridge, the skipper was guided by banks of computers, radar and sonar displays - a £30 million boat with a crew of 11 versus a 5 mile long shoal of fish.
The boat has been tasked with catching 1,000 tons of fish. The fish are not landed directly on to the boat, but sucked out of the nets by a large pump and into cold storage.
As it happened the boat caught 1300 tons of top quality fish. This was be landed in Norway, sold for £1 million and sent to South Korea for the Asian sushi market.
