Flowers as a gift?

As a guy, there's no way I will forget to get 1 red rose or 12 for Valentines Day. But what about flowers as a gift for other occasions?? Flowers are pretty, but gone in a few days. What do you think of flowers as a gift?

My mom would always say the flowers were nice, we should have gotten her something she could use.

I think that it depends on the person that you are giving the gift to, and what they would enjoy the most. Personally, I would much rather have a live plant that I can keep than a bouquet of flowers that are going to wither and be gone in a few days.
Many years ago, my (ex) husband bought me a rose plant for Mother’s Day, and I planted it and it grew and had beautiful red roses on it. Everytime we moved, I dug up that rosebush and took it along with us to the new place and re-planted it. He worked line work construction, so we moved a LOT back then, but I had that rose for years and years.
I think that at some point, we had to move in the middle of winter, and the snow was too deep and the ground to frozen for me to dig the rose bush up and take it with me.

How about both? Supermarket flowers are inexpensive and they can dress up a more practical gift.

A great old lady friend of mine used to HATE it when her husband came home with flowers for her. She said how annoying it was messing about finding a vase to fit the flowers and arranging them.

If whatever I get for my besties birthdays is a small gift, I sometimes buy a bunch of flowers too, because I feel mean just giving a 'small' gift. It's hard knowing what to get bearing in mind at this age we have everything we want and we've all got plants in our homes.
So, a cheap bunch of flowers off the garage forecourt (I jest ;)) fills a gap.

I think flowers are so beautiful, but just keep them in the ground. I don't like getting cut flowers. Usually, I would get them at work, a huge bouquet for whatever occasion - Secretaries' Day, birthday, thank you for a job well-done, etc. Then (since I don't drive) I would have to carry those flowers on two buses and one train ride for 1 1/2 hours before I got home. If I could have given them to someone else anywhere before I got home I would have. And since it usually would rain constantly and rain coats with hoods weren't a big fashion in the 1990's, I would be struggling also with an umbrella. In my family, we never give flowers as a gift.

There are always chocYes I think g8ft cards are the beolates 😋
Dinner at a nice restaurant.
Then, there are gift certificates .. though, some might say they are too impersonal.
I think gift cards are the most practical gift. If you want to put some thought into it, you can try to figure out where the recipient usually shop, so you get the gift cards for that particular store. Otherwise you can get the generic Visa gift(debit) card, but that's boring. Plus, store gift cards usually don't charge any fees, but Visa gift cards charge fees.

My wife and I send flowers to a funeral home if there is a funeral and flowers to friends and relatives that are hospitalized for a length of time. My wife’s aunt is in an assisted living facility where she has like a 2 room mini apartment and we send her flowers the first of each month. They generalist about 10 days-2 weeks. The flower shop said they put some type of agent into the water that aids in their life.

I have to say I undestand the semtiment behind the giving of flowers, but all my family will tell you, I say the same thing as your mum.. give me something that I can use... rather than flowers....

I have a garden , I have flowers, I don't need someone to give me cut flowers....

That said when I'm given them from someone who doesn't know how I feel.., and I have some right now given to me just recently.. I accept them with good grace.. because someone has gone out of their way to think of me...

I had a cousin in my home town who had a flower farm. She kept a book with the blooming dates of each flower. I bought some for my sister who lived there when I visited. I got some that would bloom on her birthday. She would let me know each year that the flowers were blooming on her June birthday.
