After getting my flu shot in late Oct. I saw on the ABC News last night that it's only 10% effective this year.......I really don't want to get the flu, if I get nine more shots I'll be 100% covered, right ?

Boost your immune system with vitamin D3, vitamin C and antioxidants. Also wash your hands a lot if you go out anywhere to stores, etc., definitely right when you get home before you start touching your face or food. In crowds of people try and breathe through your nose instead of mouth, especially if you see people coughing and sneezing. Works for me anyway, and I don't get flu shots.

I will still get the shot even this years is just 10%. They don't always get it right. Thought everybody knew that about the shots. Its just a shot in the dark. I had the actual flu one year when I did not get the shot. I thought I was going to die. I will do whatever I can to keep it away in my final years.

Ive only gotten the flu shot one year when I had to because I was volunteering at the hospital. I had no side effects whatsoever and I also can't remember the last time I had the flu.

I did have Bronchitis last year and thought maybe this year I'll get the flu shot but if it's 10% effective, I'm not bothering.

I do take vitamin D3 and C every day.

Along with two or three other supplements I've been taking a Centrum Adult multi vitamin coupled with an additional C and D3 daily for a couple of years and I've always taken the flu shot also.

I'm not crazy enough (yet) to go get nine more flu shots but I suppose the 10% effective is better than not having it at all and I'll more than likely continue to get one every year........along with the flu shot I also went ahead and got a pneumonia shot this year.

Wasn't there a few years ago that this happened then? The flu shot formula is a crap shoot. Some years they get it right, some not. I error on the side of better get it no matter what.

I had the flu shot last winter,as usual ( we are just into summer here ) I got the worst flu that ever hit Australia with a hacking cough that lasted 7 weeks .. Please be wary if you get a really runny nose sneezing bad headache go to the Dr ASAP as they had a antibiotic they could give you, within 48 hours of you contracting the flu ..There was quite allot of people died from it including young otherwise healthy people

As a side note to this... going to your doctor during the flu season can be hazardous to your health because you may end up sharing a waiting room with people that have the flu and are waiting to see the doctor. Seems like the last time I got the flu it was after going to the doctor for a yearly physical and I had to sit in a smallish waiting room/area with other people for a half hour or so, at least one of which looked to have a cold or flu. Seems like there should be a better way to do this.

FWIW I didn't go see the doctor when I came down with the flu because I don't think they have a real cure for it and I didn't want to infect others. I just gutted it out at home with aspirin and over the counter cold/cough/congestion meds I had on hand. Maybe we need to wear some kind of face mask for protection during flu season when going to the doctor?

My doctor always advises against the shot. As he explains, the vaccine is made up early in the season with an assumption of what strain of the flu will be more prevalent. Then, as viruses do, they mutate and make the vaccine ineffective. Or, the strain that is most prevalent doesn't occur in your area which again, makes the shot useless. So, he just says quell the urge to have the shot and just take care of your health.

Both, wife and I, get our Senior Double-Dose Flu shot each year. This year, I got mine before my wife did, and when we were getting ready to get hers, she got a fairly bad sinus infection that ended up some in her chest. At that point, she couldn't get the shot. She got better and did get the shot, however, she still had some coughing left. She seen her PCP, for a regular appt., and he ended up prescribing cough medicine with codeine in it. After a few days on that, her cough was basically gone. As for me, I'm darn glad that I got my shot when I did, so I didn't get anything she had.

Now, one thing to remember, my VA doctor told me that the Senior Flu Shot is only a "preventive measure" concerning getting the flu. Getting the shot doesn't guarantee the Senior won't get a bad cold or the flu, but it just won't be as bad as not getting the shot.

The emphasis should be on the body's immune system and rather than individual germs, viruses etc. Along with people being taught how to be sick-Feed a cold starve a fever etc. And yes not only should one breath through the nose(hairs are filters) but you can blow or clean them out. I use salt water spray or sniff salt water to clean my sinuses along with keeping them moist. A doctor told me dry sinuses are more open to infection because the linings can crack open which is an in for germs.

I also heard this year's shots have only 10% effective. They have to predict which shot to emphasis by April so the manufacturers have time to make them. So it's as much about a guess or prediction as it is 'science'.

I came across an interesting site about the flu vaccine: http://healthimpactnews.com/2014/go...ost-dangerous-with-gbs-and-death-settlements/

It's lengthy but with a lot of interesting info many of you will not be aware of that you might wish you knew. Here is one piece:

"The June 2014 report from the Department of Justice on damages paid by the U.S. Government to vaccine victims was recently published on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources website. There were 120 cases of vaccine injuries decided. 78 cases received compensation, while 42 cases were denied.
Most of the U.S. public is unaware that a U.S. citizen, by law, cannot sue a pharmaceutical company for damages resulting from vaccines. Congress gave them total legal immunity in 1986, and that law was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2011. There is a special “vaccine court” called the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program that is funded through a tax on vaccines. If you are injured or killed by a vaccine, you must hire an attorney and fight tax-funded government attorneys to seek damages, as you cannot sue the drug manufacturers. As you can see from the report below, it takes years to reach a settlement, with the longest case below being settled after 11 years. Therefore, this report probably only represents a tiny fraction of the actual number of people harmed or killed by vaccines, since it is so difficult to fight the government in court to win a settlement.
As in previous reports, the June 15, 2014, report covering a 3-month period shows that the flu vaccine is the most dangerous vaccine in America. 78 cases were awarded settlements for vaccine injuries, with 55 of the settlements being for the flu shot, including one death. Most of the settlements for injuries due to the flu shot were for Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Other flu vaccine injuries included: Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, Rheumatoid arthritis, Shingles, Brachial plexus neuropathy, Bell’s Palsy, Brachial neuritis, Transverse myelitis, Lichenoid drug eruption, and Narcolepsy."

And this:

"You should also be aware that senior CDC scientist Dr. William Thompson has recently come forward as a whistleblower to reveal that the CDC has withheld data from vaccine safety studies that did not support the official CDC position on vaccine safety. In a recorded phone conversation with Dr. Brian Hooker, Thompson stated that injecting mercury into pregnant women creates a “clear and present danger” to the unborn child. The CDC whistleblower stated that mercury in vaccines causes “tics” in children, and that these tics are 4 times more prevalent in kids with autism. (Story here.)"

I have never had a flu shot and as far as I know I have never had the flu. A very good friend of mine died three years ago of the H1N1 (swine flu); he thought he "had a bad cold and that he would wait it out." A week later he was hospitalized and died; he was only 58 and in pretty good health prior to contracting the flu. So if you suspect you have the flu, please see your doctor ASAP.

Since the local media is touting an "epidemic" in the Houston area I am trying to stay home as much as possible.

Just for grins, this is a link discussing how to tell whether you have a cold or a flu ( https://www.cbsnews.com/news/is-it-a-cold-or-is-it-the-flu/ ). And here is an interesting part:

"Symptoms

Common cold symptoms include a sore throat, congestion, sneezing, and a cough.
"Colds tend to start very gradually. You might get a slight sore throat and then the congestion begins. And one or two days into it, you can develop a cough."
Flu symptoms, on the other hand, include fever, body aches, and fatigue. A high-grade fever of 102 to 104 degrees F probably signals the flu.
"The flu is very different. It has a sudden, severe, and abrupt onset. One minute you feel fine and the next, you feel like you were flattened by a truck. The herald symptoms really are fever, body aches, chills, and fatigue," Phillips said."
