Food, drink and Costs of theatre

We like theatre, especially comedians and musicals. There is a magic about the stage.

Recently we went to a large venue where the show was to begin at 8pm. In my life I have never seen so much food and drink being bought and consumed. Honestly you would have thought people hadn't eaten in a week! Of course the prices were exorbitant.

We can't afford all that. So I always make sure we eat a quick but filling meal at home before we go, I just couldn't risk leaving it to chance, all those long queues and ridiculous prices. I also hate eating standing up and rushed.

I must say theatre times are usually awkward. It's military planning to ensure enough time to eat, travel, the parking - which is always difficult and often very expensive.

Do you like theatre but find it all rather tiring and overpriced?

Love the theater and do not find it tiring at all. If we did, DH and I would not do it anymore.
We like musicals, plays, and magic shows. We don't bother with comedians anymore.

The theaters in my area do not serve food. There are beverages and snack items.
I am a donor, so I get free parking and free beverages/snacks - win-win!

As far as times go, we enjoy the Saturday matinees (2pm).

Yes but I never go nowadays. Prices are very high even in suburbs for one person. I have seen most of the big musicals by now. The other plays in the city are quirky and Woke as if appealing to racial themes or suffering. Not entertaining to me.
Besides, I miss some dialogue because of hearing issues and mumbling lines.
I don't go there to eat.

The most I see from Broadway comes from watching The Tony Awards. Also, this past Saturday "Good Night & Good Luck" starring George Clooney as Edward R. Murrow was shown Live on TV. It would have been better in person, but my Broadway days are over.

Sometimes, PBS will show plays. TV is my closest connection to the theater, which I really miss.

Living in a small town there's not really any chance to see top plays or musicals. We have a couple of community playhouses, which we've attended a few times. There's no top talent but most of the productions are fairly good. At any rate it's a nice night out away from the boob tube.

I love live theater and somehow managed to go to several shows when I was "Poor Girl" in my 20s and early 30s. I don't remember ever buying food at the Broadway shows but used to in the movie theaters. I've long since stopped that foolishness. I bring my own snacks and even a small bottle of something to drink. My purses are large enough for them.
