UNDATED (WKRC) - A company has recalled a seafood product after it tested positive for cancer-causing chemicals.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are human-made chemicals that can increase risks for diseases, such as types of cancer. Bumble Bee Foods has issued a recall after one of their items, Smoked Clams, tested that they were at unacceptable levels.

The canned clams were sold across the country, so all customers should check the labels on these items. The 3.75-ounce cans with the UPC Label 8660075234 were the only products included in the recall.
The company explains that PFAS can accumulate in the environment or a person’s body because they cannot be broken down easily.

PFAS are commonly associated with several conditions, Bumble Bee Foods explains. They include increased cholesterol levels, increases in high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, developmental effects, decreases in immune response, changes in liver function, and increases in certain types of cancer. However, consumers may experience other conditions not noted on the list.

There have been no reports of illnesses in connection to the Smoked Claims, but many of the potential conditions may take time for symptoms to appear.

Buyers should not eat any of the products included in the recall. The company says that the best way to avoid illnesses associated with the products is to throw them out immediately. It also suggests that anyone who has eaten the clams should seek medical help if they were concerned about eating the contaminated food.

Customers should also mention potential ingestion of PFAS in future medical checkups.

The company is offering refunds and says that customers should contact Bumble Bee Consumer Affairs.

Thank you for the heads up Rose, but for me unless they are fried, I won't have to worry about the clams. I do eat peanut butter, however and I've noticed in the last few months that both Jif and Skippy peanut butter were recalled (at different times). The Jif recall was due to salmonella. In addition to the peanut butter, this product was also affected:
"In addition, USDA has issued a recall on ready-to-eat Super Asian Chicken Salads that were made with recalled Jif peanut butter and sold at an Amazon Go retail location in Washington state."

The Skippy was recalled due to the possibility of small metal fragments in the product. You can check which batch was affected in each of the links I've added. https://draxe.com/health/skippy-peanut-butter-recall-2022/

Thanks Diva. I knew about Jif, but not Skippy! 🌹
