Food safety are you picky or do you gamble

Hate waste but yesterday I cooked some tofu and then put it in the oven to cool or my tabby would get into it. Forgot about it until I noticed it wasn't in the refrigerator when I got home from work. It was cool in the apartment but I didn't want to risk eating it and getting sick. Had to throw it out. :(

Please no anti-tofu comments please.

I like tofu but have to have a taste for it when I use it.

I don't play when it comes to food. Once a long time ago, I had a relatively mild case of food poisoning but it still tripped me out. I was dizzy, seeing double, had stomach pain, etc. If I feel something has not been handled properly or kept hot or cold as it should be, I'll say something to management about it. The other night I went to my son and DIL's house. She had left cooked chicken on the table, covered for a couple of hours. I told her it's not a good idea. Her response was that she's done it and nothing happened. My grandson chimed in saying "But it's not recommended". I wasn't planning to eat the chicken and my son does not eat meat. Still, I wanted her to be aware. I'm leery about those bagged salad greens because a few times they've been found to contain harmful bacteria. I'm also leery about precut fruit...did they wash their hands properly or wear clean gloves (preferred)?

Good for you. I refuse to eat bagged slads.

One thing I am especially concerned about it home canned food. I can everything from fish to jam but I am bang on up to date with USDA processing updates, which I might add are far superior to the UK , Australia or Canada. I will not eat home canned foods unless I know the person very very well who had processed it. I get into trouble all the time by telling folks they are doing it wrong but I try!!! Now that is playing Russian Roulette, and there will be someone out there who says they don't do this or that and nothing has ever happened to them.. I don't fancy dying of botulism personally.

I won't eat outdated food- why? To save a few dollars? Oh yes, those few dollars count, but my well being counts more!

You want to run to the john all night to save $5.00 of rotten meat or fish by ingesting it? Who would rather vomit all night or possibly end up in the hospital or worse- because of the fear of "wasting" ANY amount of money on food that might be poisonous?

If you've played the game and won so far, good for you. It would be my luck to sit up all night, sick. Not going there, not for anything!

"WHEN IN DOUBT, THROW IT OUT"

I totally agree and would add that why eat it when not so good anyway, it doesn't taste as nice. I can see someone in extreme poverty eating food that is inferior and perhaps I should not judge as I am fortunately not in that position. I absolutely hate waste of any kind but I would throw food away if it was not as wholesome as it could be.

Jeannine, because of what's in cans, we should be concerned. I cut way back on my canned foods usage but of course they are good to have in case of emergency. Here's an article about BPA in cans and how to reduce the danger. As far as the FDA, I've seen too many instances of their stamp of approval on harmful additives that lead me to believe they do not have our backs. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-l...ealthy-eating/expert-answers/bpa/faq-20058331

The USDA canning info doesn't go into food additives, it is primarily for temps, jars, food groups and what can be canned where etc and for that purpose is excellent
