From scratch or originally from a packet ?

Now I'm sure many of us use a mix of cooking from scratch and using pre-packaged foods.. and some of us cook wholly from scratch..but I was watching a youtube tutorial video.. the woman was probably in her mid 40's..so not what you would class as very young, and she was giving household tips on how to save money ..

..at one point she said.. ''most of us make pancakes the traditional way from a pre-mix bottle .. but I can show you a new way by making it with flour milk and eggs.. and it will save money..

I had to replay it twice.. she was deadly serious, she really clearly meant that the 'traditional way to make pancakes'; was out of a pre prepared bottle ...

..my daughter is in her mid 40's and despite working a full time job, she makes all her food from scratch, learned from me but is she in the minority.. or aside from those who do it as a profession, do Millennials really think that food from a packet is traditional fare ?

Oh, hell to the NO! My DD firmly believes that all food should come from a drive-thru, delivery service or a sit-down restaurant:ROFLMAO: unless, of course, I'm willing to make it (from scratch) for her. DGD is of the same opinion with the exception that she will rarely eat anything made at home no matter who makes it or how it's made:rolleyes:.

If DGD ever leaves home (doubtful), she can save a lot of money by having a house built without a kitchen.

see, after watching that Video, I'm not surprised tbh .. ( albeit that my dd makes hers from scratch).. I have to say I was totally taken aback.. but when I think of it, I'm not surprised, because they've all grown up with take -aways and pre-packet foods.. it;s a pity tho' that many are not aware of the dangers lurking in so much pre-prepared foods.. or maybe thay don't care..

One daughter makes things from scratch, though she does have a lot of sauces on the fridge door. She‘s a darn good cook!

Just realized I haven’t eaten at the other daughter’s in years. She used to take short cuts but maybe I don’t know. She was chopping up veggies for a stir fry as we were talking on the phone today and one day she was chopping onions for french onion soup.

When they were kids, all they got was food made from scratch and many of those years I didn’t have electricity. It took forever.

it is always funny when some young person thinks they found a NEW way when in fact it was the original way all along

@hollydolly It's not that they don't care, it's that they seem to have a notion that eating that stuff is only bad healthwise for other people. You know, other people. We are all Other People!

I guess she thought she had made a great discovery. :D

Perhaps she thinks people make their pancakes from a mix. I use a pancake recipe that uses no eggs and I make it with soy milk. Super easy.

she clearly absolutely did, because she called the ready pancake mix ..'the traditional method''

Every time I have tried prepackaged foods, I am disappointed. Same with restaurant food. Even though I normally cooked from scratch (taught by my mother) I realize now that I was using very unhealthy ingredients. Manufacturers were smart in the way they got our government to recommend their foods and everyone wanted the new convenient foods.

I think every generation is a mixed bag.

I grew up in the kitchen with my grandmother and mother.

I was young enough to believe that we were having fun and IMO that is the key.

Every kid seems to have a brief little sweet spot in their development when you can capture their interest in something for life.

None of my nieces and nephews have any interest in cooking.

I believe it's because my sister found it easier to park them in front of the television when they were little than it was to have them helping her in the kitchen.

I cooked everything from scratch when the kids were little. Had them help me with food prep, and was always available for cooking questions when they moved out. I have 4 boys and a girl. The oldest has a wife who is an amazing cooks and also cooks from scratch so he does little to no cooking except what gets done on the grill. My other three boys and my daughter are all excellent cooks. They all eat out a lot too, and have food delivered, but each of them does a reasonable amount of cooking too. The point is, they know how!

Ron and I make everything from scratch. There isn’t much processed food in the house, and what there is is whole grain, organic, non GMO etc. We each cook our own breakfasts, (high protein) prepare a snack/lunch bag to take with us (fruits and veggies, salad, maybe some leftovers from dinner, nuts, cheese or yogurt) and then we average about an hour at night chopping and peeling and dicing the veggies for our dinner, unless we do something simple like he’ll throw some steaks or chicken on the grill and I’ll do a quick salad.
