Front porch sitting & mental health

My grandfather would practically live on his front porch when the weather was warm enough. He lived north of Toronto. He had a couch like day bed there that he would nap on. He read his newspapers there and listened to the radio and talked to many, many neighbours that walked or sometimes drove by (they would stop and roll down the window and talk for a minute if traffic allowed).

Now I’m close to 50 and feeling lonely, I thought if we expand our front porch I could do the same. It would be a pandemic safe way to socialize, that I would enjoy doing even in non pandemic times. I live in a very walkable neighbourhood where there’s lots of dog walkers on our street because there’s a park up the block. I can’t walk often myself due to Crohn’s disease. I need to stick close to a washroom. I’m thinking a porch may do my mental health a world of good.

We already have approval from the city to expand the porch, but can’t afford to do it until next year. We have a really small front porch that can’t fit a very comfortable chair to read in, but I’m going to try out of desperation. I would love to sit out there and read.

This long rambling post is basically me asking if others do what my grandfather did and I hope to do as a way to interact with the neighbourhood and help stave off loneliness.

I agree. Though I do not regret my move to apartment living, I do miss my side deck and front porch on my old house. Great to enjoy the outdoors. I used to have a neighbor cat who would come to visit every time I was outside. Plus visits with passing neighbors.

I grew up in a house with a porch & loved it. A nice glider , 2 rockers with good cushions, plants, a trellis with roses on one side and honeysuckle on the other. Most of the houses on our street had one. Growing up my friends and I gathered there, people visited back and forth.
Later on in life I had a house in a suburb of Pgh. That had a great porch too. My DD still has the very sturdy chaise and rocker on her patio.

At this age I know I couldn’t keep up a house any more and don’t want the work, but I did really enjoy the porches! You said “”we”, if the the person with you would enjoy it and you all have the funds and could stand the temporary disruption the add on would cause, I’d say go for it! I know Kingston isn’t exactly tropical, but I’m sure you would have enough pleasant weather to make it worthwhile. Might add to your property value too.

We currently have a nice covered front porch that has two chairs. It is too far back from the road for most conversations, but my 20 years old cat and I sit out there in the evening and enjoy the sunsets and the birds and squirrels.
So nice.

I have enjoyed life with homes w/ porches in the past, and miss that way of life ....
I now have my outside patio at my apartment these days, and have a glider to sit and watch the world go by.
Lil'Bear enjoys the patio too .. he goes out there several times a day and has fallen asleep just people and dog watching.

We are blessed with a front porch that extends the width of our house. We have 2 comfortable side chairs and a loveseat on our porch, plus a couple of other chairs for company.
Our view is of South Mountain, which is 2,000 feet high and only a few miles away. We are also close to a small airport, and love to watch the planes. We love to sit out there almost all year and read.

During this pandemic, a front porch would have been wonderful. You can sit and watch the world walk by. My parents didn’t have a large porch but they sure had lots of neighbours stop in during busy weather.
