My grandfather would practically live on his front porch when the weather was warm enough. He lived north of Toronto. He had a couch like day bed there that he would nap on. He read his newspapers there and listened to the radio and talked to many, many neighbours that walked or sometimes drove by (they would stop and roll down the window and talk for a minute if traffic allowed).
Now I’m close to 50 and feeling lonely, I thought if we expand our front porch I could do the same. It would be a pandemic safe way to socialize, that I would enjoy doing even in non pandemic times. I live in a very walkable neighbourhood where there’s lots of dog walkers on our street because there’s a park up the block. I can’t walk often myself due to Crohn’s disease. I need to stick close to a washroom. I’m thinking a porch may do my mental health a world of good.
We already have approval from the city to expand the porch, but can’t afford to do it until next year. We have a really small front porch that can’t fit a very comfortable chair to read in, but I’m going to try out of desperation. I would love to sit out there and read.
This long rambling post is basically me asking if others do what my grandfather did and I hope to do as a way to interact with the neighbourhood and help stave off loneliness.
