Fuel

When I got my license in the early 70's, the gas "crisis" was just beginning. Gas was about 50 cents a gallon or so. But went up regularly. I remember thinking that it was nuts this was happening just as I was having to start contributing to filling up the parents car.

While in High School, in the late '50's, I pumped gas and washed windshields, on weekends, at a nearby Skelly gas station. Prices varied between 25 and 30 cents/gal....depending upon if there were any "gas wars" going on. The station manager allowed us to gas up at his cost, and I sometimes paid as little as 15 cents/gal.

I don't remember but what I do remember is my grandmother always pulling into the gas station and asking for $2.00 worth of gas.

I don't think that she ever bought more than $2.00 worth of gas at one time in her entire life and it always seemed to be enough to get her where she needed to go.

.25¢ a gallon.. Everyone who wanted to "cruise" paid a quarter when they got in the car..
