Garage Door Repaired

I have had a chronic problem with my garage door reversing as it's going down. I had a professional garage door service tech here today. He said there were bad pulleys and springs, but the main problem was a bad installation. I asked him to elaborate, but he just blew air and rolled his eyes. $250 + tax for the repair, but the door slides up and down like butter now. Keeping my fingers crossed.
 

When the technician was finished, I asked for a receipt outlining what work was done and the warranty. He looked puzzled and said that it would be mailed to me. This was two weeks ago and I have not received anything from the garage door company. Emails and phone calls have gone unanswered. What should be my next step?
 

Wow, I don't know. Hopefully, someone else does.

But I would take away from that experience,
that the next time, any work is needed on any household item or vehicle,

I would probably ask, before any type of work is started or done,
would they write down for me, exactly what was being done, and for how long will they stand behind their work.
 
You didn't mention how many estimates you got before hiring him. Assuming he was the first technician there, in the future get several estimates before hiring someone.
I had a large, dead tree in my back yard that needed to be removed before it fell on my neighbor's house. My first two estimates were $9,000.00 & $6,000.00, not including stump removal.
The third company I called did it for $3,000.00 - including stump removal, other major brush trimming, haul away & spotless cleanup. All three companies were licensed, bonded & insured. The first two were just greedy.
 
I am not going to bother with chasing down the least expensive contractor for a $250 job, but I appreciate your advice where thousands are on the line. I got 3 estimates for about 400 sq ft of roofing this past autumn and none were under $3000!

It looks pretty general, but still, as I say, I think it's a lot better than the no-replies, you had been getting from him.

It seems to me that is was worth the efforts you made, to get a reply in writing..

I should have also mentioned that comparing cost is not the only reason to get more than one estimate. There is a variation in knowledge & skill among people in any field. You'll want a knowledgeable, experienced repairman.
 
Deb, just curious, you don't have to reply. Are you getting the house ready to sell so you can downsize? If so, find out how much you can get for the house ''as is'' from a reputable realtor, then decide if you want to spend all that money (and hassle) to fix the house.

BTW, my garage door also has that problem like yours. Since I never park inside the garage, I'm letting it stay as is. When/if I decide to sell, I will just sell as is, let the new owner worry about it.
 
I am far from being ready to sell the house - still working to get it cleaned out. Garage sale season starts in 3 months!

I do park my car in the garage - it helps protect the car form the elements.
