Gardeners,, have you had

Plants dug up by some animal?

Bought a new Clematis at the locale farm store,,,yesterday.
Planted it Saturday.

Got up this morning,,noticed diggings where I planted the Clematis.
The whole plant was dug up!
Couldn't see any damage to it,, replanted it.

Covered it with some mesh material we had.

Any idea what dug it up?

I thought the cats had,,, then noticed corn on the porch.

Plants are often dug up by animals like squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, skunks, and opossums searching for food, such as grubs, worms, or buried nuts, or for habitat digging. They frequently target newly planted shrubs, potted plants, or areas with fresh compost and high-quality soil.

I agree with this. The mentioned animals are suspect for digging up plants. Here’s a list of some ideas for deterring such things from happening. What type of clematis was it?
Clematis is my favourite flowering vine.

@Jeni Clematis is a dark red.

I asked for Clematis while we were at the Greenhouse.
The Amish lady showed me what they had,,none looked very healthy.
The dark red was $39.
I thanked her but wasn't taking a chance on dead looking plant.

This afternoon I worked on the flower bed where the Clematis in planted.
Cleaned out weeds,,moved flower bulbs around.
Put down some mulch & a bird statue.

If the critter comes again & digs up the Clematis,,, a box trap will be set.

Thanks to all that answered my thread.
