Gaviscon Advance shortage

I cannot get my prescription filled, each pharmacy as well as my doctor surgery says they cannot get any. I have been taking it for acid reflux and it works well but I can't get it. I must wait because it is expensive to buy and I get my medicines free.

Strong Peppermint sweets are as good as Gaviscon, Rose,
my mother told me and she took both, but preferred the
sweets, they are made by Trebor.

Mike.

That's odd Rose, because I just got a large bottle the other day in Tesco...what reason are they giving for a shortage in your area ?.. I can't remember where you are
It's the chewable Gaviscon Advance, on prescription, that pharmacies are short of. I am entitled to free medicines, so I am not very pleased to have had to pay to buy a pack, nearly £10, to get a supply to keep up my treatment.

Acid reflux, is a fancy name for "Heartburn", Rose and that was
what my mother had.

Mike.
I understand. It's just my ENT consultant prescribed Gaviscon Advance and so I ought to keep taking it until my condition is fully better. I'm better but still not totally clear of it, six months after a cold triggered acid reflux.

So the peppermint in those must be effective. As so many natural remedies are. I might try them, as well as peppermint tea.
I have a Hiatus hernia.. with that comes horrendous Acid reflux...I take Lansoprazole on prescription... I don't eat foods high in acidity like lemons, vinegar, spicy foods... but if I eat something with high acidity..like processed food, biscuits or cake I get Heartburn despite the Lansoprazole , ... and believe me no peppermints will shift it... only Gaviscon .

I do sympathise. It must be horrid living with such discomfort, mine is not that bad so far, just tiring when I get a phase where I cannot clear my throat - disgusting! I am loads better than a few months ago though. I still find the best medicine is Benolyn Chesty cough, it brings great speedy relief.

Will your condition get fully better eventually?

No..unfortunately....

Are you willing to try another medicine Rose? I've had acid reflux so badly that I doubled over in pain, that felt like I was having a heart attack, then I would throw up which relieved it. My gastroenterologist put me on Aciphex, which worked very well. After a time, insurance companies stopped paying for it. I had Aetna, a friend who had BC & BS said the same. Between my Gastro and my PCP giving me samples, I had about 6 months worth. After I ran out, I was prescribed Omeprazole. During my annual medication review by the pharmacist, I was told it was contraindicated with the drug I was taking for osteopenia. The pharmacist said Pantoprazole was better, so my doctor put me on that. I've been on it for a few years and it has worked very well despite the fact that I sometimes forget to take it (I may miss a day). I no longer get those awful attacks.

My problem is mild compared to you. I am on Omeprazole once daily and should take a Gaviscon Advance 4 times daily, that's after each meal then bedtime.
Yet my cough attacks happen at random times.
