Gemini Man - The idea. The concept. The morals.

Just watched a movie titled "Gemini Man" (Will Smith).

The main idea of the movie was to clone people with edited DNA, removing emotions, fear etc. to produce "perfect" soldiers. In a monologue the "father" of the idea argued that doing so would:

- Create soldiers that don't have to suffer fear or other emotions when "doing their job"
- No veterans coming back from war with a ton of problems (remorse, grief for losing friends, PTSD etc.)
- No grieving families for losing a son, husband, parent etc.

Being a pacifist, I'm not going to argue against war which is bad in any case. But if we consider it to be a necessary evil (let's buy the idea: "for protecting human rights, democracy, etc.") how would you react to the Gemini Man idea?

(One could argue that robots could be created instead. I'm not sure about the value for money of that option but for argument's sake let's not consider it for the time being.)

That's what I was thinking... that robots could be used instead. The movie's not very highly rated and I don't buy into the concept, so I won't be watching.

That said, if there was a way to somehow control our emotions, I'd make an appointment to have it done tomorrow. I wonder if they can just sever the amygdala.

Hey Irwin! Thanks for your reply!

No robots option! :)

Would you really want to get rid of all your emotions, or just control them?

My first preference would be to have the ability to control them, but if I had the choice between having out of control emotions and not having any emotions, at this point in my life, I think I'd choose the latter. Life would definitely be easier!

Of course, without any emotions, I wouldn't enjoy anything — there would be no joy, no humor, no sadness, so there's that, but I'd be willing to live that way if I could get rid of the fear and anxiety I live with. I think I would, anyway. Maybe not. I might become a mass murderer or something, and I wouldn't care if I got shot by the police or locked up since I wouldn't have any emotions.

I wonder how many people in prison lack emotions and that's why they committed their crimes; they had no sense of consequence and no shame or remorse for what they did. They're psychopaths and probably don't care that they're locked up.

I'm not sure if you have told your story before (I'm only a month old...here) and I'm also not sure if you want to share it in public (or in private). I'm curious about your fear and anxiety being so strong to the point of wanting to rid yourself of all emotions!

Please forgive my curiosity and I will, definitely, not be offended if you wish not to share.

I bit OT, but I had an acquaintance that had zero feelings
He could talk about offing someone, over a cup of coffee, in the same breath with discussing poor laundry service

Whatever emotion he had was just dread of getting put away
But
That's not real emotion
Animals have that fear thing

I wonder if it's complete lack of emotions to start with or gradual desensitization (kind of like surgeons)

I guess that makes sense...
Throwing somebody off a cliff is not messy at all....
Especially if you never have to go to the bottom of it....
Yeah, cliffs scare me

One must practice not looking over the edge
Earplugs for the incessant screaming are a help

Not feeling isn't any fun either, try taking an antidepressant for a while and you'll soon be sick of it.

Inmates are pretty emotional...and they hate being locked up. The Ted Bundy type psychopaths are a small percentage of the prison population.

It would make sense to implant "disable" devices in them and at the end of the war rendering them manikins stored in warehouses until the next war.

I suffer from a fear of people, otherwise known as social anxiety disorder, so if there was a way to rid myself of that fear, my life would be completely different for the better. I'd rather not go into the causes at this point, though.
