The Beatles have a different opinion of that. (Excerpt from Wikipedia): (I had also read this before.)

John Lennon trivialized Martin's importance to the Beatles' music. In his 1970 interview with Jann Wenner, Lennon said, "[Dick James is] another one of those people, who think they made us. They didn't. I'd like to hear Dick James' music and I'd like to hear George Martin's music, please, just play me some."[SUP][70][/SUP] In a 1971 letter to Paul McCartney, Lennon wrote, "When people ask me questions about 'What did George Martin really do for you?,' I have only one answer, 'What does he do now?' I noticed you had no answer for that! It's not a putdown, it's the truth."[SUP][71][/SUP] Lennon wrote that Martin took too much credit for the Beatles' music. Commenting specifically on "Revolution 9", Lennon said with ironic authority, "For Martin to state that he was 'painting a sound picture' is pure hallucination. Ask any of the other people involved. The final editing Yoko and I did alone."
 
That was only Lennon's opinion, not all of the Beatles. I've seen plenty of documentaries on the Beatles and it was a different story.
 

I read a biography on Lennon's life and he did have quite a big ego. I think he didn't like giving credit to anyone else.

IMO and several professionals, Lennon and Harrison was the brains of the outfit. John Lennon was one of the better song writers at that time.

McCartney was a genius as well, IMO. But when he wanted to change the labels to McCartney-Lennon that's when I was no longer a fan of his.
 
I think it was Martin who pushed adding or laying down multiple tracks for one song. This helped improved the studio recordings which in turn lead to sales. I guess Martin was the one who made sure they came off as musicians and not arteeests.

I remember a documentary I watched where Martin was talking about Paul who asked about an orchestral instrument he'd heard (can't remember which) and it was included in a song. So many of their songs are unique and there are none to compare.
