That was only Lennon's opinion, not all of the Beatles. I've seen plenty of documentaries on the Beatles and it was a different story.
IMO and several professionals, Lennon and Harrison was the brains of the outfit. John Lennon was one of the better song writers at that time.
I think it was Martin who pushed adding or laying down multiple tracks for one song. This helped improved the studio recordings which in turn lead to sales. I guess Martin was the one who made sure they came off as musicians and not arteeests.
