Getting a new computer.

My 6+ yr. old computer finally bit the dust (dreaded blue screen) over a week ago and my computer guy said that the mother board is toast and by the time he replaced that and tweeked / upgraded a couple of other things, parts and labor wise, it would be close to the same money for me to just go ahead and buy a new Dell Inspiron Compact desktop so he's going to pick one up this weekend and then come by the house and get it tweaked / configured the way I want it one day this coming week......he tried to recover some things for me from my old one, mostly pics, but couldn't.

Luckily for me with him being in the computer business he did have this used loaner Dell that I'm on now for me to use since the day mine crashed so I haven't had to deal with "cyber withdrawl syndrome". :)

The one I'm getting.......

Looks like a good choice!

I have a Dell much like that, mostly for the grandkids. I've been a Dell owner for about 30 years now, my go to brand. The only bad experience I had was the one I am using now. Last year was the end of my business and wanted to get a good tax deduction. So I decided to splurge on an expensive top of the line Dell... to make a long story short it was a mistake. Should have stayed with my typical more moderate choices.

Two things really get under my skin.

1) When my computer is on the fritz.

2) When my car needs repairs.

Congrats on the new computer! I buy a refurbished one every 5 years or so from a connection I have in town. He put Windows 10 in this one I'm using now. He charges me around 150 bucks each time and sells me a great product.

Our old HP desktop died not long ago. We bought something similar to yours, but not the same one. Dell Inspiron desktop, model 13910-3112 BLU-PUS. I don't know much about computers, but it seems to be working okay. Not sure I'm crazy about Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge, but I'll probably be switching to Firefox again and use a different search engine besides Bing. Haven't made any changes yet, been kind of busy and wanted no issues with the computer right now.

First let admit up front that I don't know diddly squat when it comes to computers and me and Dolly Parton have a lot in common when it comes to them.......

Dave (my computer guy) called earlier and he said that he had picked up the new computer and had started messing with it and he said the reason he cant' recover any of my old pics and 'bookmarks' from the old hard drive is because the actual hard drive itself is kaput.

Dave is probably in his early to mid 60's, writes a bi-monthly colum in the local paper about computers, has a few YouTube videos out, has a in home computer repair and build shop and is the IT man on call for more than a couple of local businesses so I'm pretty sure that he knows is stuff.

Did he tell you to back up your files?

Your bookmarks should be restored automatically when you log in since they're stored in the cloud, or at least they are for Chrome. I'm not sure about other browsers.

Did computers have The Cloud 6.5 years ago that auto-uploaded pictures and stuff? I'm just thinking maybe IKE's aren't really lost....and I'm thinking you might know about this.
Well, my Android cell phones will automatically upload photos, and as a Google product will also upload periodic backups of settings, texts and ? to Google Drive. My desktops all run Linux, and could be set up for automatic backups to some cloud storage service, if I desired.

I presume that @IKE's desktop machine is running some version of Windows, OneDrive is built in to Windows 10, I'm not sure what version @IKE's machine is using.

Yeah, my over 6yr-old Hewlett Packard PC does, too, and I can access certain files of mine in Cloud without too much trouble. And it doesn't seem to matter that I don't use very many of Windows' installations. I run Firefox.

But that's HP, so, yeah, it could depend on the brand of IKE's device.

I once was at a computer shop where the self professed owner was trying to get data from a malfunctioning laptop. the lady was upset because she had all school class grades etc on the laptop. the "computer guy" said he could not retrieve the data from the hard drive...I said I could and in the ensuring convo was kicked out of the store never to return and the lady following me to my house. I pulled the laptops hard drive and using adapter cables plugged it into my tower and pulled all the data off the lady wanted...learned that all laptop drives made by a certain company (western digital or seagate) all have the same connector just an adapter for a particular laptop so you pull the adapter and use an adapter cable. it is 44pins on the laptop drive to 40 pins on the tower..works,,have done it many times..
next story....................

florida the next story..another laptop another lady badly needing files back and another 'computer guy' says cant be done..
lady brings me dead laptop (and she is a cutey,, wowza) and I start taking it apart and she gets like hey wait a minute and I say trust me......took the drive out again connected it to my tower with the adapter cable and pulled all the files of and burned to cd. put the laptop back together and charged her $20,(would have liked to do something else but,, he he he)

yalls want to store to the 'cloud' on someone elses computer.. why???
put the stuff you really really need to keep on a flash drive and keep it to yourself, flash drives are big enough to store anything yall would want!!

That, or what I've done many times as "that computer guy" co-worker: just boot a 'live' Linux media and copy whatever files desired to a thumb drive.

ah yes you could also do that. linux live does load only to memory, I have a live knoppix cd.
but my stories predate the 'live' linux...

if it was only the motherboard that was toast then the hard drive should be totally recoverable.. you have to pull it and install as secondary drive in another computer, I have done this many times with near total success!
Conversely if the hard drive was toast then perhaps the motherboard is okay. 🤔
Plus considering the windows typical blue screen behavior, perhaps the hard drive would work fine with linux mint.

Don't think much of your computer techy, irrespective of the motherboard fizzled is very easy to remove the HD, and extract anything off the HD, I am no expert but I have done this many times for friends' computers using ALL IN 1 HDD Docking,(See pic)
