Getting a new computer.

yalls want to store to the 'cloud' on someone elses computer.. why???
put the stuff you really really need to keep on a flash drive and keep it to yourself, flash drives are big enough to store anything yall would want!!
I personally don't trust "cloud" storage and have removed it from all of my computers. For backup, I have a good quality external solid state drive (SSD) that I store in a safe place. Mine is 1 TB but you can get much larger ones.

It's only important to back up your personal stuff like pictures, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, scans, etc. There's no need to back up your operating system, drivers, and applications like MS Office, your browser, antivirus software, and so forth as they can always be reloaded from the internet.

I keep all of my personal stuff within one master folder on each computer. Once a month I plug in the SDD (just a simple USB cable) and copy those master folders to it. No fancy "backup" app; just a simple, basic drag & drop copy. It's easy, reliable, and only takes a few minutes.

I've been doing this for years and it's saved me a number of times. :)

I got ChatGPT to write a Python script that backs up my files onto an external SSD. It took a few tries to get it to produce the correct code, but it finally did! I run it as a Windows service.

Dave called last night and said that he'd be by this morning at 10:00 with my new computer......he jokingly said that I'd probably better install a seatbelt on my chair before I use it because the new one is going to be a lot faster than my old one. :)

This is interesting! I have a TOSHIBA back up hard drive attached to my MAC and I save files there. Is SSD better? Also, I've started using ChatGPT to ask basic questions, and even to find out what are the best shoes to buy, lol!

A solid state drive is about 50% faster than an SATA hard drive. That was my experience when I upgraded my old computer. And they should be more reliable since there are no moving parts.

Thanks! After I read your first message, I went into Chatgpt and asked them about SSD vs hard drive. They said something similar. The reason I am interested is that I had an external hard drive (Seagate, in 2019) where I had saved a lot of files, and now it won't work. It just keeps spinning (I can hear it). I bought another one after that died (TOSHIBA) and I keep wondering if I will have the same issue. So I might look into an SSD. The other option is to copy unto usb flash drives.

Google Drive offers 5GB for free and they charge for anything over that. It's a little slow, but it's free cloud storage. I've never had any problems with it other than when the internet goes down, but that's not their fault.

Decent monitor for a decent price.

It works great and is soooo much quieter than my old computer which by comparison sounded darn near like an old lawn mower on it's last legs. :)

Dave had already pretty much set things up at home prior to coming by plus he got my Windows 11 registered in my name and had installed his preferred browser and free anti-virus which are Firefox and Avira https://www.avira.com/ ......I'm going to email Norton to see if they'll refund my unused 8 months but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for any money to show up.

Edit: I just got off the phone with Norton and they said that they can only send refunds for the unused portion of the 12 month period if the cancellation is within 45 days of the renewal date and mine renewed back in Jan. of this year......no biggie I wasn't counting on getting a refund anyway.

They did say that I can install the unused Norton months on my new computer if I want to......that won't be happening.

W11 is a lot different (at least to me) than W10 and I'm still getting used to it.....I did invest $19.00 in the Windows 11 For Seniors book yesterday and it showed me how to do a couple of things so as far as I'm concerned the book has already paid for itself.

Sounds good Ike! I still need to get rid of microsoft edge and download Firefox again. I loved the old Norton that I got free with my Xfinity subscription, now that I'm paying to continue it, I see it has changed greatly. Always spamming with popups to buy more of their services which used to be included. Norton got too greedy and disrespects it's paying customers, IMO. Will keep it for now, and think about dumping it when my subscription runs out. Your lucky to have Dave, he makes it so stress free. (y)
