Our latest arrival.

This is an Oar Fish.

Many were seen by the fishermen before the Earthquake in Japan.

They are a deep water fish that comes to the surface when they are either dying
or if there are very deep, deep water disturbances.

There are many records of Japanese fishermen noting the presence of Oar Fish
in the water before earthquake events... one of the early warning signs actually.

To see one of these at the surface is a sign of something quite wrong about to happen.

That is amazing.

Something like that could be responsible for sea monster sightings, since Oar fish are not usually seen at the surface.

While taking an Asian Studies class, I learned that the Japanese actually rely on animals to predict significant environmental events, as opposed to using seismographs and other technologies. Which makes a lot of sense.

Remember the huge tsunami back in 2006? Apparently, some tourists were taking elephant rides, exploring one of the islands. The elephants usually follow the same path for each tour, similar to trails commercial horse back ride companies set up. The animals walk the same path every time, without variations.

The elephants, with the tourist still on them, walked off the trail and headed for higher ground before the first wave of tsunami actually hit.

Nature is amazing.

These are utterly amazing fish ! I was reading that they can get up to around 50' long , which is almost as long as my trailer house is. That makes the one in the picture, not even an overly large one.

I found a video on YouTube and just watching them swim is beautiful ! The body seems to just drift along , almost looking like a submarine, and the fins on top ripple and wave as they move the fish through the water.
You would think that they would swim more like an eel or snake, but they don't do that at all. Not only that, but the video said that they often swim vertically in the water, as opposed to most fish.
Here is a short and beautiful video showing this incredible fish in action underwater.
