A few weeks back I found an old Barnes and Noble gift card I had forgotten about. Checked, and it still had about $13.50 left on it, out of $25. So Friday, I figured what the heck. Traveled on out, headed right for the bargain books to see what I could uncover. Found Harper Lee's Go Set a Watchman . If you remember, it was apparently the first draft of a book, and her editor did not much care for, editor asked for a rewrite..which became To Kill a Mockingbird.
When Watchman came out, I really had no plans to read it. But saw it here, it was $6.98 and I had a gift card, so what the heck. Bought this one, and another bargain book, spent out the gift card and came home. Started reading it and am not impressed at all. I am so glad there was a rewrite. If you go into this book with the expectation that it is all about the Finch family 20 years later, you will be disappointed. I knew that going in, but wanted to give it a go. Even though I KNOW it is a different telling, I still cannot help comparing it to Mockingbird as I am reading it. Scout is 26, Jem has died, Atticus is old. And Scout now lives in New York City, and is home for a visit.
I am going to finish the book, to see how it tells, but after this, I will listen to other reviews before buying.
