Going to Audiologist for dizziness and tinnitus in ears

I mentioned to my doctor about my balance/dizziness/tinnitus and other ear related issues. She referred me to a audiologist. Going next month. Also had a couple instances of severe vertigo, so bad it made me nauseous. SO I will have a hearing test first, then a visit with the doctor afterward.
I was talking with my brother about it (think two old people venting about health issues, because that is what we do). He mentioned I look up crystals in the ears. O.K. Big brother, what are you smoking?
But I looked it up, and what the heck, there IS such a thing as crystals that can cause dizziness and balance issues. Here is an article

I also have a bad case of Tinnitus. Probably got it back during the early days of my career when I was shooting w/o ear protection. I went to an ENT or an Otolaryngologist, who did a super job with the examination. He scheduled me an MRI to make sure that I didn’t have any tumors. I just wanted to know if I had a brain. When the doctor told me I did, I asked for a note to my wife stating that I do have a brain because there are times when she thinks that I don’t.

My girlfriend's husband had the same thing, @Marie5656 . He was fine since he worked at the exercises and they all fell out. He didn't have tinnitus. Good luck.

@RadishRose thanks. Actually, I think my appt. is with an Otolaryngologist. 911 mentioned that, and I could not remember the name.

I have not had a hearing test in years. And have not been to an Otolaryngologist ever. So, it will be interesting. My brother is the only one, among our parents, and our other brother who now wears hearing aids. I guess crystals were brought up during one of his visits, and he had them too. I am actually looking forward to it.

I hope you let us know how it goes.

Ear crystals
I had a problem with this a year ago and the first case of vertigo was awful. On the plus side, you will be amazed by what a good ENT (dizzy Doctor) can do. Mine got my crystals back in place in a matter of a few minutes.

Good luck Marie! I have a mild Tinnitus in one of my ears, but it isn't too loud and only acts up when I aggravate it, like listening to the radio with earbuds, and I stopped that when I realized I had a problem. Most of the time it doesn't bother me though, thankfully.

I never heard of Ear Crystals, but there were a couple of times in the past that for no reason at all, usually triggered by my lying down in bed really fast, or rolling over on my side really fast. I'd get the room spinning, dizziness, nausea, etc. But it only lasted a few minutes when it did happen, and hasn't happened in a long time. That's probably what was going on with me.

I ruined my hearing (over 30%) years ago when I was an avid walker and had ear buds in my ears to listen to music while I walked. I use to turn it up so loud that it actually ruined my hearing and I've had "noises" (not ringing) in my ears for years. I had a hearing test done about 6 years ago and it was 30% then. The worse thing is getting in a restaurant or any place that has a lot of background noise. My ears just roar or have such "static" sounds that I can't hear any conversations even if they're sitting or standing right next to me. I was told by the audiologist that nothing could be done. I don't get vertigo...thank goodness. Good luck, Marie.

I've had tinnitus for years. In my case it is genetic, the hair cells in my ears just started dying off although I am sure my exposure to big Naval guns did me no good either. My audiologist has also there is nothing to be done except live with it.

Actually, I didn’t know that brain cancer can also cause Tinnitus, thus the reason for the MRI. I was really relieved the day after when the doctor’s office phoned and told me that no cancer was found.

Why do I read these messages. So I can start worrying again?

I have had tinnitus for about 50 years. And I sympathize with those who have it in a noisy room with background noise. And also have to tolerate those who tell you to get a hearing aid.

The hearing aid makes it worse. It's hard to explain that to others.

I have tinnitus, too. It is the worst when I wake up in the morning (like rushing water). I can hardly hear the TV. don't know if it is related to possible sleep apnea. I know the hearing is not very acute in my right ear. I can hear, but it sounds are muffled, although I have to say I did puncture my right eardrum about 12 years ago. Almost everyone I know 65 or older wears hearing aids, and even then, it doesn't help some of them.

My audiologist told me that a hearing aid would not help...don't spend the money. I appreciated her honesty. My husband wears hearing aids and he can adjust the background noise with his.

Yes...mine is worse in the morning when I first get up. I watch some channels on Youtube when I have my coffee and I can hardly understand them. :(

I find that I cannot hear anything that comes out of a loudspeaker.

Such as when I go to a funeral. If the priest or those who are speaking are not on a microphone I can hear every word.

As soon as they get on the microphone and the sound is coming from the speakers, I might as well not be there.

And I don't understand when people are making a public announcement on the speakers why they have to shout. That's what the amplifiers are there for.
