I went and got some mulch to clean of our flower beds after the winter freezes. After I got back I decided to start up the tiller and work the garden patch up. Seems we jumped from winter directly into summer without much of a spring season. In spite of all the pollen in the air I do like to be outside. On some of my less ambitious days I putz around in the shop and think about all the reorganizing I could do, on another day. Fresh coffee waiting then a good shower and back to my kindle for a little reading.

Yesterday was even warmer, but closer to 70 F is even better to be out and active today. Our grass hasn't hit mowing height quite yet and the tulips (though ahead of schedule) aren't quite blooming yet.

We've had a beautiful Start to spring already....Daffodils have been and gone.. Tulips are getting ready to die off ... lots of other spring flowers blooming now...
Flowers beyond believe here, just not in my yard, don't have the energy to do it anymore. Can't get down and up like the good old recent days. I am going to concentrate on a few vegetables instead. I have a good thin shovel to dig little holes and just drop the seeds in and cover.
The question I have for all you gardeners is how to take out some hedges in the front of the house. They are red tipped photinas and have been here for 35 years. They are starting to die and I just want to rip the whole thing out. Make a nice little flower bed to plant annuals. It would cover about a 4ft. wide by 25 feet long. Suggestions please. I thought my son might be able to hook them at the bottom with a chain and use his truck to yank them out. Would that work?

I have red Photinas in my back garden... they're about 6 feet high, and 10 feet wide..I planted them myself around 2010... not dead, very much alive and I've never dug them out, so can't help there Blossom, sorry...

Yes, they get out of control very quickly. Constant trimming, the ones in the front are about 4ft. high. I am just tired of dealing with them. I have lost two the last few years but the others kind of filled in the blank space.
I had cherry laurels in the back when we bought the house. They covered the whole back fence and kept the grass from growing properly. My husband cut those down for me. I made a lined bed all along the back fence that is where I raised my vegetable garden.
The neighbors wisteria has come over the fence and I love it, so pretty.

I have cherry Laurel at the back which is 30 feet high, and soooo wide, and of course not only sheds a lot of leaves and flowers it also sheds the Black cherries.. ... that's much harder for me to deal with than the Red Photina, I don't mind the latter at all, it doesn't really shed, and is easily trimmed... the more difficult is the 100 feet of hedging I have of cypress.. that exhausts me, and now they are well over 6 feet high they're beginning to be too much for me standing on top of a ladder with an electric hedge trimmer, and I may have to pay for a gardener soon...

this is one of 2 Choysia shrubs I planted about 12 years ago. They grow very fast, but easy to manage. This one grows nest to the Laurel at the back...

They are so pretty, I don't know how you even keep up. I was used to it, I always did the yard work but after my husband died, I developed a whole lot of problems, I just can't handle the heat. I have cervical neck problems and have no strength in my arms to use the trimmer or weed eater. Now, I have to rely on the son. I did manage to trim the photinas the other day but it was so hard.
Hopefully your new home will still have a garden but not so difficult to maintain. That is why I am looking at things I can remove and plants easier, lovely plants that bloom and come back season after season. I don't mind that kind of investment.

Beautiful day, looking a lot like Spring...on a regular basis. Got the rest of 2-1/2 acres of weeds mowed off and looking better. Still have a lot of trimmer work, several hundred feet of 4 ft tall weeds along the fence line.

well I have arthritis in my hands , knees and back, so the gardening is very hard work for me really, altho' my joints aren't twisted or unusable , they are very painful, and swollen at times...
If I can find a home that I want.. I really only would like a small outside space...or a flat with a balcony... I'd miss the garden, but really the work is very hard and quite painful for me , and I have to be at it mist days all through summer to keep it looking good, and not allow it to get out of control
I have all the birds nesting in the laurel at the back.. and the hedgehogs also live behind the Laurels, it's a very safe place for them

I know it will be hard to give all that up. Sometimes things happen and we realize after a lot of deep thought what would be best for our futures. I hope you will find a cottage or flat close to the ocean. You will only need to go for a walk to enjoy the beauty of your new home. Yes, it is! Today we're taking our visitors over to the beach to have lunch looking at the ocean and then take a scenic drive. I'm planning on sucking in all the negative ions I can while I'm there.
