Google wants me to verify my age

Got a legitimate email from my Google account wanting me to verify I am over 18. To do that, they want me to upload a pic of my government ID, my credit card number or a selfie (because apparently it can verify I am an adult from my picture)! Since I am doing none of those things, they have restricted my account to teen settings. i just went in and deleted everything in it because i rarely use that account.

I then googled the problem and it seems many accounts have had that same issue for years. it might happen to you. Ridiculous.

That's the overall Google account?

Not any particular part of Google?
So they don't just check, before using an adult section of some kind?

I made that gmail account to play a game, years ago. I actually called their customer service and yah, that is their policy that they have been rolling out for years. I told them I never remember putting in a birth year to make an email account. I have never had to do that on a yahoo email account.

It may be related to a new law in Australia about children under the age of 16 having social media accounts deleted
….Very soon ….

I’d expect google doesn't check what country you live in ,cause I’ve heard of others who don’t live in Australia getting the same message about checking age, on the other hand be ~ VERY ~ WARY of handing over info before you check and double check ..it’s legit …

Was looking at my Google account last night and noticed when signing up a few years ago, they asked for my birthday and that is currently listed in the account profile. But they have never asked for proof of my age and I wouldn't send them pictures and documents if they asked. The credit card associated with the google account is no longer valid. The card has long since been replaced after a previous compromise (that I can't blame on Google but have no idea who compromised it). I have no intention of providing my current card number. I don't ever buy anything through google or google store. I use free apps. I'm not a gamer either.

Never mind about Google!

I was recently in WA at a grog shop buying some beer when the bloke behind the counter asked me for some ID. I thought he was joking and said, "Don't I look over 18?". Turns out it is the law in the northern part of WA, my ID (driving licence) was registered and I could not buy grog again for 24 hours.

This ID business has gone mad.

That may be

That may be part of stopping our indigenous people buying to much Alcohol @Wombat who knows …

Some states and countries have laws like that for social media. Sometimes it depends where one is trying to use the account from ie ip address associated with/from a certain state. But that's not right either because internet providers have to reroute traffic on occassion.

I think its one of those scams where Big Tech gets your ID & associated info, your photo for facial recognition, and whatever else they can get out of you. Big Tech is trying to take control of the people.

I'm not a conspiracy theorist, it's just I've seen Big Tech do some very underhanded things, and I trust them 0%. Even FB wanted several views of my head in photos they wanted me to upload to them, before I could sign up for an account. That was a few weeks ago. I needed FB for some investigating I was doing, so only for an hour or so. I am not gonna touch them with a 10-foot pole.

If "they" could roll the clock back to the 70s, I'd be there. Gosh, I'd be 50 years younger, so you guys could join me and we'd party like it was 1974!

I've had a gmail a/c for years, but I haven't been asked to prove anything (so far).

There is a significant trend of states enacting laws to restrict online adult content access, with over 20 states passing such laws, and the Supreme Court recently upheld Texas's law in a major 2025 ruling

Facebook put me in Facebook gaol, and when I tried to find out why I got the following box on my screen.

Facebook dialog.jpg

I don't need Facebook so I won't be providing them with any form of selfie, video or otherwise.

I think the only reason they want a video of my face is so that they can then sell on my information to big tech, who will then use it to direct their marketing approach once they can see how old I am (75).

As I'm not interested in receiving targeted ads from anyone, I'll just stick to keeping away from Facebook.

so I just went and logged back into my facebook account after being off of it for almost 6 months. on my phone it goes right through. on the computer the only thing it does is the recaptcha human verification thing where you pick all the squares with buses or motorcycles or whatever.
