Got a letter from tone zoning board

In the mail yesterday I received a letter from the town zoning board regarding two pavilion like structures we had built a few weeks ago. The letter requested we complete a building permit application and measurements from center of the road to front and back of pavilions.

Both structures are complete without further building, however, it is likely we have dismantle both structures and hopefully gain permission to relocate them elsewhere on the property.

We have 4 days to comply.

Sorry about that Mr. Ed. My neighbor did the same thing. A $300 permit or tear it down. He chose to tear it down.

My contractor has to give me a copy of his worker's comp exclusion document I scan along with completed permit application. Zone officer will determine if the structures are too close to the road, which is likely true.

We have $5500 invested in both pavilions, but it is likely the structures will have to come down and hopefully moved to an area I can park my car and invite the neighbors over for cookouts. That is the original design and purpose for each pavilion.

I have two adjoining properties, one a 16X16 pavilion type structure that doubles as a carport. The other pavilion is 12X12 both have metal roof's and wooden poles for support.

Very well built and sturdy, it's a shame to tear them down.

I had no idea you needed building permits for a lot of stuff. I figured, yeah, if you built a new home, well, you need a building permit. But I didn't know you needed one to redo your roof., replace windows, put in a drive way. I understand the need for permits, so construction isn't real iffy, and isn't going to fall down.
Mr.Ed, you mentioned "my contractor". I assume you had a contract. There had to be a provision as to who was to secure the permits. If it was like most contracts, you were supposed to secure them. What happened?

I was just going to mention that the contractor may have some responsibility in this matter.

many years ago, was replacing fence around yard before it just fell down on its own. i had to get (pay for) whatever they call that map of my lot that shows boundaries and where your house is on the lot. i know for a fact that the original post/rail fence was put up by owner & neighbors when house was brand new. a bit of an "Amish" barn raising type thing. everybody had kids, most had dogs. about every weekend, trucks would roll thru the development with p&r materials for CHEAP. all the new homeowners had lots (pieces of ground and amounts) of dirt that they wanted to enclose... and all were probably less than 30.

soooo, got that map of my lot and headed to township to get permit. it didn't cost a lot. i had to DRAW where the old fence was and then draw (with another color) where the new fence was going. that's all i had to do.

over the years, we put in a wooden deck... no permit even attempted. now that was on the back of the house and no one could see that project in progress. later we put up an aluminum shed beside the house. pretty big and i'm SURE way too close to both house and property line.
