Gravity Hill

Falcon lives in the prestigious coastal Palos Verdes Estates section of Los Angeles County.

I posted him regarding the strange phenomenon on Palos Verdes Drive known as "Gravity Hill", but I didn't receive a reply. Maybe he didn't notice the post.

When I lived in San Pedro in the late 1940's, we would occasionally drive around the scenic Palos Verdes Peninsula to go to Redondo Beach where we would have a picnic and play in the surf.

On the way we would pass over a short stretch of Palos Verdes Drive known as "Gravity Hill".

People would stop their cars, put them in neutral and release the brake, and the cars would begin to coast UPHILL!

I just wonder if Falcon remembers this place.

I know this must hurt Hal, But you're WRONG !

It's Rancho Palos Verdes. And, yes; I know all about those streets.

Yea, back in the 70s or early 80s various municipalities in SoCal. tacked on the "rancho" to their town's name, apparently to make it sound more 'exclusive' or increase the real estate value.

Remember Cucamonga? It became "Rancho Cucamonga", and all of a sudden, their were decorative stone cross-walks and road dividers("islands"), shopping malls sprang up like a skin

rash, every home built had identical tile roofs, etc.

Real estate prices went through the roof.

Palos Verdes really didn't need the "rancho", they were already exclusive, like Beverly Hills.

Thank you helenbacque, for believing in my story.

I looked up "Gravity Hill" on AOL Search, and it turns out there are 39 Gravity Hills in the US, with 6 alone being in California, as well as many others in foreign countries.

The effect is due to an optical illusion of the slope of the roadway caused by surrounding geology and absence of a visual horizon.

Yup. Entirely WRONG to do that. (Some people don't think about things like that.)

(Ike, I sent you a PM regarding this. Did you get it?)

( And thank you for your Viet service. I just finished reading a book about it; Fields of Fire By James Webb)

BTW, I took some of my flight training in Enid and Altus in Oklahoma; Great state !

I don't have a dog in this fight but I would be "Extremely Pi$$ed Off" if someone posted where I live on a public forum......not a very wise thing to do in my opinion.
