Gunshots at Trump Rally

Former President Donald Trump fist pumped to a crowd of supporters as he was escorted of the stage after shots were fired at his rally.

Although it's unclear if the former president was struck, Trump's ear appeared to be covered in blood as he walked off the stage.

Secret security was quick to respond after shots were fired and immediately surrounded the president to insulate him and shield him from any potential gunfire.

Trump, evidently dazed, asked for his shoes before the security detail conducted him off the stage.

Before leaving the stage, Trump defiantly waved his fist before the crowd.

The crowd, energized by Trump's pumping fist, broke out in a chant of 'USA! USA!'

As Trump was escorted toward a waiting black vehicle, the security personnel held their hands above his head to ensure he was safe.

In the background, some of the crowd cheered on the president, while some wailed in horror.

After the apparent shots were fired to the left of the stage at the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Trump and the whole crowd dropped to the ground.

At the time, the shots rang out Trump was displaying a chart of border crossing numbers.

I watched the video. He was speaking, and then just grabbed his ear and went down behind the podium. There were a bunch of gunshots, maybe 6-7 of them, and people screaming. They said other people had been shot also in the assassination attempt.
The first shot hit Trump in the ear, so only inches away from killing him with a headshot. It is good that he went down at the first shot, or the succeeding ones might have killed him.

It's almost like it was something else... any thoughts? Buckshot? Can that travel very far? Obviously I'm just thinking out loud, but a gun and a bullet to a head/ear isn't going to have someone jumping right back up with a little blood.

Anything is possible, I get where you are coming from, the picture I posted certainly leaves a few questions that's for sure.

Depending on the distance and angle hit at, it could just possibly graze. A direct pellet hit would cause more than trickle down blood. I'm no firearms expert though.

I think Kate, the bullet just grazed him, but then where did it go?!
 
Here is a closeup of the shot to his ear, and it appears to me that the shot came from above him somewhere, and then went through his ear twice, either that or two shots hit him.
The reports were that the rooftop snipers were shooting into the trees to try and bring down the assassin. One report said they had got the shooter, but this was not verified, just someone said they heard it on the police scanner.

Next day edit: It appears this early TMZ update was most likely not accurate. Such is the beast of early reporting... details still emerging.

TMZ Update:
UPDATE

4:23 PM PT -- 4:21 PM PT. A source who has spoken with a member of the Secret Service tells TMZ, Trump was not hit by a bullet. Rather, a bullet hit his teleprompter and the glass struck him by the ear. We're also told 2 people at the rally were hit by gunfire and are in the hospital. We do not know their condition. We're also told the shooter was taken down by Secret Service.
