we are planning having ham for christmas dinner---is it better to buy the shank or the butt of the ham?

All things being equal the butt has more meat but I usually buy a larger shank ham.

The shank is usually cheaper/pound, easier to carve and has a nice bone for soup.

For a holiday it can also be a good value to go with a spiral-sliced ham even though they tend to be more expensive people usually take smaller portions, especially during the holidays when there is so much wonderful food to eat. The spiral sliced bone-in ham is easier to serve and is great for sandwiches. I've had good results with the Appleton spiral sliced hams from Aldi.
