I meant to post this yesterday. He was born on Valentines Day, how apropos. Here's a Facebook "memory" of what I wrote about him in 2016:
Happy Birthday to Gregory Hines, entertainer extraordinaire and one of my all time favorite artists. Not only did he bear an uncanny resemblance to my beloved cousin Ronnie who drowned at age 26, his character, the witty cop in Running Scared, was so similar to Ronnie's personality. Gregory was a triple threat...he could dance, had a sweet singing voice and was a marvelous actor. I first saw him perform on T.V. when he was part of Hines, Hines & Dad. I was blessed to see him on Broadway starring with Phyllis Heyman in Sophisticated Ladies. As talented as he was, he was in awe of and learned from tap dancers who preceded him. He was admired by those he mentored, including Savion Glover. I was heartbroken when I learned he had died of cancer at age 57 in 2003. Broadway dimmed it's lights in his honor. Thank you for all your artistic contributions and Rest In Paradise Gregory.
Here are additional accolades mentioned in Wikipedia: "Hines starred in more than forty films and also appeared on Broadway. He was the recipient of many accolades, including a Daytime Emmy Award, a Drama Desk Award, and a Tony Award, as well as nominations for a Screen Actors Guild Award and four Primetime Emmy Awards.
