Has anyone seen the commercial on TV for a Shingles med?

It`s the one where the husband is feeling miserable and sits down on the bed and his wife lifts up his white tshirt to reveal this horrific "rash" on his back-not really a rash even-looks more like he was severely burned or something. Question for those of you who have had Shingles....was I just incredibly lucky or does Shingles really look like that???

TV thrives on sensationalism....and a drug company is going to use the most obnoxious example it can find to convince people to buy its product.

I had a bout with shingles at about age 45, and I thought I was having a heart attack with all the sudden chest pains. I went to the hospital emergency room, where it was diagnosed as shingles, and I developed a nasty rash on my chest and shoulders that looked like a good case of acne. The pain lasted, off and on, for several days, and the rash took 2 or 3 weeks to subside....as I recall, I just used calamine lotion to keep it under control...and I changed t-shirts frequently as these rash "pimples" burst, etc.

Shingles is some nasty stuff, and I wouldn't want to go through that again....but take anything you see on TV with a grain of salt.

I broke out in a rash fist, it got thicker and started breaking out in little blisters. I did look like l'd been burned and the pain was horrific. I can't describe the pain of just my shirt touching my back.

I don't care if it looks like that or not.. it's the pain that most people describe as horrific.. and I don't want it.. I had my shingles shot a few weeks ago. Anyway, I've seen that commercial... I wasn't sure what it was for.. the vaccine, or a medication. They don't say. They just say ask your doctor or pharmacist. DO they mention a medication?

Mine did not break out like his but the pain made up for it. A red rash with little blisters was what I had. I had mine last May and I still am numb and at times sore on my side. Some permanent damage I'm told.
My doctor tells me the shot won't prevent them but would help to make the effects easie if I get them again.

I plan to ask my doc about taking the vacination on my next visit. My mom had it and it really bothered her. But didn't look like the commercial.

I think the commercial used some license to get the point across. I don't think shingles usually look like hamburger meat hanging on someone's back like in the ad. HOWEVER, it is impossible to convey the intensity of the pain in a commercial, so they made it a visual. Nothing wrong with that if it gets folks to protect themselves. I have never heard a shingles victim describe it as a walk in the park. ALL you hear is how bad the pain is. SO the commercial, while taking liberty with the visual gets that point across very well.

I was lucky. I had about 8 or 10 round red circles on the front of my thighs. Husband knew what it was so I got the antiviral from the doctor the same day. Lasted a week and never burst. It did really hurt to touch them and I couldn't even have cloth on top of them.

Thanks QS-you would be the one who would know. I saw that and said "Oh man-I must have really lucked out! My pain FELT that bad so I can only imagine how it would have felt if the rash was that bad! ALTHOUGH,I did something really, really dumb. My daughter called and told me that the OTC cream Capsacian will help relieve the pain of Shingles. I was in so much pain that I ran out and bought some and slathered it on. OMG!!!! Guess I should have read the instructions first. DO NOT APPLY TO BROKEN SKIN. Capsacian is made from hot peppers! So what did I do then? Took a hot shower to wash it off. Can you say "Open up the pores?!?" I was on fire. What a dummy...

Mine was no where near that bad. Still the pain was excruciating and I had another bout in a different region 10 years+ later. I'm left with an occasional 'burn' sensation at my tail bone region to this day.

I had the 'shot', but it's less effective at later age.
