Have you ever lost a beloved pet?

After fifteen years I lost my snowshoe siamese cat. I am having a very hard time accepting his passing. I have two other cats neither hold the same bond or emotional attachment. One is the queens bee and does not want to be held and wants to be the only cat. The other is a long hair and she sheds like pigpen from peanuts comics. Both were strays.
It is a long story as to how I came to have the siamese cat and there were strong emotional bonds acquired over the years from the first day.
I have lost pets before but none like this one. It just tears me up every time I think of him.

Oh my goodness, yes I have. Not only have I lost a pet, I've sat in the corner of a vet's office and cried like a baby (even if men aren't supposed to cry, which is untrue of course) when I had to put a dog down, because he was suffering with no chance of being healed. Several times I held my friend in my arms and petted him (or her) while he/she took the last breath. In all cases, they were wagging their tail. That, to me, is the humane way for a dog to pass.

I have to weigh all of this with the joy of having and caring for a dog. Every time, I opt for another dog, and probably always will.

Yes I have. Dogs, cats and birds also. I find it just as hard to lose a pet as a family member,to me they are family. So sorry for your loss. I have one bird left and miss my cat and dog. We travel quite a bit and can't take a pet with us so we really can't get one. Each one we have had has a special place in my heart.

I certainly have. Over six years ago my calico died of old age. 5 1/2 years earlier my other cat had died at similar age. They were never friends and I think my calicos happiest years were when she was the only cat.

About 7 months later I adopted two littermates. I had been looking around and then I found a very similar calico kitten on Craigs list. I adopted her and the other female in the litter. I thought she would be just like my calico I had lost. **buzzer sound** No way. Her personality could be no different. I love them both but actually favor her tabby sister. Who is very bad and gets into everything.

Seriously though they are all different and all their own personalities. I'd think about getting another cat. Integration of a new pet in the household is never easy but please think about it. They do leave a big void. I still tell my current calico she is nothing like ______ was.

I'm so sorry for your loss Deucemoi, my heart goes out to you. I lost my last dog in 2015 who was also very dear to my heart, said goodbye to too many furkids over the years to mention, a few I've written memorial poems for and they all bring a tear to my eye when I think of them, will never stop missing them.

We had a toy poodle for about 15 years...when the kids were growing up. He was almost like our 3rd child. It was so sad to see him declining in his final weeks and months. One of the saddest days of my life was when I had to take him to the vet for the final time. To this day, we cannot bring ourselves to get attached to another pet. Luckily, the neighbors have a wonderful little beagle, and when they go to work, she comes over to our place and spends the day.

So sorry for your loss and I feel your pain. I won't have another pet after losing our beloved cat of many years. I still get misty when I think about her.

Deucemoi, I've lost several beloved dogs over the course of the years. I love dogs and would feel lost without one, and when each one goes it is heartwrenching. My dear
vet, who is one of the most compassionate people I've ever met, says to always remember that letting a suffering pet go gently is the last kind thing you can do for them, to save them from the suffering of the bitter end of whatever it is, and that it is a great gift to them. It doesn't make it hurt much less, but it is a comforting thought.

You have my deepest sympathy; it is so hard to lose a dear friend and companion.

We had two different mixed breed 'pound pups' (Buck & Sugar) that lived 26 years between them and the last one I had to take to the vet 10 years ago to be put to sleep (one of the hardest damn things I've ever had to do) because of age related illnesses.....seizures, bladder control, partial blindness etc.

Mixed or purebred I really like dogs but I'm not prepared to ever go through again what I did ten years ago.....till this thread I hadn't thought about "Sugar' in quite awhile, that's all I have to say.

We had a parrot for 35 years. She liked to be petted just like a dog.

When we got our chihuahua puppy, he was smaller than the parrot.

I am so sorry for the lose of you cat. Yes, I had a spitz that I got When he was 8 wks. old and he lived to be 18 years. What a loss that was and yes he was my baby. Grieving is hard, but it gets a little easier as time goes by. Will put you in my prayers.

I have had many animals in my life and I loved them all but I have to be truthful and say I specially bonded to two much more than the others. They both lived to a ripe old age but when they left me I felt I had my heart ripped out, there was about 20 years between the two of them.

It took me a very long time, I will not kid you, it was ages to accept the fact that they were gone, many years in fact, but honestly I can now look back and just remember the good times and enjoy the memories.

I lost one on 1959 and one in 1978.

The very special bond you had I understand and it will get better, I promise.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved pet. I have experienced the loss of several pets in my lifetime. The last was a big dog named Lucy. I held her as she was put down by the vet. Here is a poem called The Rainbow Bridge which gave me some comfort at that time. I hope it makes you feel better.

I am sorry for your loss. You did not loose a pet cat, you lost a beloved member of your family. I, too, have had pet cats pass away. Yet, there was one, whose passing cut me to the core. Your cat will live as warm and cherished memory.

It's not easy to lose any animal that is a loved family member, anyone who has lost a pet will understand the heartache you are experiencing, so sorry for your loss .

What a beautiful cat Deucemoi!

My parents had a siamese when I was a teenager. I could call him and he would jump into my arms(if he was in the mood). I moved away and had not been home for ages. As soon as he saw me, he launched himself into my arms and gave me the biggest face rubs ever. I miss that old cat. He was quite a character. When you receive love from a cat its real love.

We lost our cat last year aged 17. What made him special he was blind since birth. To look at him you could never tell. It was amazing just to see how he coped with everyday life. He was allowed free reign of the garden but was never allowed out at night.
He used to run around and miss objects just like a sighted cat.

I still miss him terribly and cannot replace him yet. He is buried in the garden. His favourite place
