Have you used a Uber?

I am a driver - car and two motorcycles. I have used Uber a few times.
I've used it to pick up both my car and motorcycle after service - the drop off was scheduled so I could pre-coordinate with friends, but they never know precisely when the service will be done.
Cheaper and more convenient than taxi (I'm on the outer edge of the city and seldom see taxis). I've read that Lyft in cheaper in some circumstances, but I don't use it enough to worry enough to find out.
I also used it to and from the airport on my last trip. Cheaper than long term parking and much more convenient.
One thing I wish Uber had, is a way to request a ride pickup at a certain time. I never know how far away the nearest available car is so I request it 10-15 minutes before I actually need it just in case, but I have to be ready to go in case they are just a few blocks away.

This can be done, although I'm not sure about the mechanics. A friend who is kinda new to Uber was nervous about getting to the airport on time, so she reserved a car to pick her up at a certain time. (I told her Uber is very fast, but she still felt better reserving in advance.)

I've used Uber twice, in New York, because my nephew set it up for me. I'm one of the last people in the world with no smartphone (don't want one). It was fine. Nice drivers, nice cars, no issues.
I have relatives that use them regularly. In some cases (unfortunately), it's because of too much inbibing. At least they have the wherewithal to not drink and drive.

For what it's worth, the people I know that use them regularly have similar comments to other posters. Cars come on time or very quickly, cars are clean, and yes, cost less than cabs. Whether you believe it's wrong to use these ride services at the expense of taxi drivers, that's another issue.

People have mentioned ubers killing the cab business. You know what's going to kill the uber business? Autonomous cars. And I can't wait. Imagine having your car drive itself. Or, calling a self-driving car to come pick you up. No more having to deal with the self absorbed horrendous drivers on the road. I have to deal with them every day on my way to work.

Autonomous cars are going to have a tremendous impact all over the world. I have heard they are trying them out on over-the-road trucking firms.

My daughter, who was visiting me recently, took Uber to the airport. She knew what the fare
would be in advance(half the price of the taxi she took to get to my place!), all was charged
to her credit card, driver was pleasant, car was fairly new and clean.
Of course, like most of her generation and younger she had an Iphone, something that I do not
have.
I maybe old fashioned but I would never use an autonomous car!

Yes, as in crash. :eek:mg1: Self-driving cars = disastrous situation which I hope never happens.

wrong to use these ride services at the expense of taxi drivers,

To my knowledge there's nothing stopping a taxi driver from becoming an Uber driver. If taxicabs weren't so slow in arriving, expensive, and unclean Uber wouldn't be putting them out of business.

Yup. It's going to happen. How long it will take is hard to guess. But all the big car and truck makers are experimenting with them now. The trucking industry is really interested because there is such a huge shortage of truck drivers. If people won't go looking and training to drive, then you've got to eliminate the position to keep business going.

Oh, for goodness sakes.

I don't know how this thread - which is specifically asking people about Uber - got derailed to a couple of random predictions about autonomous cars but I'd like to see the discussion get back on topic.

I think I would use Uber if the hubby was unable to drive although it isn't widely used in my area of New Jersey yet. I'm becoming a very nervous driver and just venture out to the supermarket and surrounding stores. I think as time goes on it will become quite competitive and maybe even more affordable.

Talking about autonomous cars IS on topic for this thread. It is a natural progression of the subject matter relating to Uber usurping taxis. The basic premise of cabs - which is paying for someone to transport you - has been around in one form or another for centuries. Uber is just another evolution of it. As will autonomous cars when they are widely available.

What other words besides "autonomous cars" can't you say on this thread? That would be considered "derailing" the topic? I thought discussion boards were just that - discussion.

Most people find it easy to look at a thread title and determine what the subject is. Just because you think autonomous cars is topical and that they are coming to take over the roadways doesn't make it a fact. If you look at the thread title the question asked is whether people have taken an Uber.

There's nothing stopping you from creating an autonomous car thread.

Gotta agree with applechruncher
If anything, autonomous cars might well become the antithesis of Uber and other individual transportation services.
