Helen Keller: why is a TikTok conspiracy theory undermining her story?

The young grocery bagger gal at the store this morning said something about a growing belief spreading on the internet that Helen Keller had faked being blind and deaf.
I had to check that out, here's one Google result: Helen Keller: why is a TikTok conspiracy theory undermining her story?

"When the internet is riddled with conspiracy theories, it can be difficult to decide which to worry about. While QAnon and Pizzagate are proving themselves to have radicalising potential with real-world repercussions, others are flourishing beneath the radar, or certainly going unnoticed by anyone over the age of 25. What I mean to say is: teenagers on TikTok doubt the existence of Helen Keller.

I know – I had to read that sentence a few times, too. How could Keller’s existence be up for debate? There is extant film footage of the author, activist and disability rights advocate, who became deafblind after a childhood illness, learned to communicate using hand gestures and to understand others through the Tadoma method, and learned how to speak. She attended Harvard, wrote 12 books and many more essays and lectures. Her autobiography was adapted for film and stage. She travelled the world, campaigning on civil rights, labour rights and women’s suffrage. Her book on socialism was burned by the Nazis. She died in 1968. Her birthplace is now a museum. Rest of story "

I don't think I've ever heard a GOOD thing about that blasted TikTok. Those would be the same teenagers who deny the Holocaust and many other parts of history just to hit something viral with their ignorance.

These kinds of crazy people with crazy ideas have always been with us, the difference now is that the internet gives them an easily accessible platform to reach millions...
Makes me real glad that people like Jim Jones and his nuclear holocaust didn't have the Internet to spread their garbage... oh, and Manson for his Helter Skelter "prophetic messages"... TikTok would have grabbed right onto things like that.

It seems the easier it is to do research and decide for themselves what sources are credible, the less apt some folks are to bother.

Hanging out on Tik Tok might explain why the girl was bagging groceries, a job that requires no higher levels of intellect and judgment than not putting eggs at the bottom of the bag.

I couldn't agree more. I thank goodness I've never looked on Tik-Tok, it sounds like it's a place for lunatics..
My former business partner/friend that's moved from the local area used to be an IT manager with the county. As such I assumed that she would be extra skeptical of social media platforms, especially those that could pose a security issue. However, as of late she's been using Tik-Tok to post some content on Facebook. Tik-Tok appears to have mostly innocuous content, much like Youtube and other video based media.
It's always the outrageous extremes that get the attention.

The girl is a nice young lady, I did not say she was hanging out on Tik-Tok, she just mentioned the Helen Keller "fake" accusations that she had seen online because the customer who was just checked out was blind, but some had suggested that he was faking it.

I learned how addictive the Facebook habit was when I stopped cold turkey. Realizing that false information wasn't taken down or reined in, even when FB knew the info was spreading like wildfire, soured me permanently on that site.

I've never logged into Tik Tok, but know a lot of Millennials and younger who accept the word of "influencers" as gospel truth.

Understood. I thought she believed the HK accusation and stand corrected. Hope it's a good lesson for her to be skeptical of what she sees and reads on social media.

The core of much of our media watching and opinion formation. However with today's internet the problem is much worse than it was with 2 or 3 TV channels and the local paper...
Maybe so, but credible sources still abound. Brittanica.com, History.com, Biography.com, PBS.com and Wikipedia and AFB.org (American Federation for the Blind) were the top six hits when I typed "Helen Keller" into my duckduckgo search engine.

Tik Tok is probably a good source for discovering the latest fads, but is at the bottom of the list for verifying stories for historical accuracy.

I'm puzzled how she pretended to be blind at such a young age. My God, she was a conniving little turd, right?

This is what you get when people watch a movie like "Titanic" and wonder "Oh, that really happened?"

Or think they're the next hot tiktokker who'll make $$$$$$$$ online without much effort.

And it generates revenue. As long as it pays, Tik-Tok-ers and YouTubers are gonna keep making up outrageous sh!t and putting it out there. But of course, the problem lies with the millions of people who click on that crap. It's sad and disappointing.

What's bold, true. I do watch some Tik-Toks usually individual or 2-3 person dance groups, animals, and there is a foster Dad, Billy Perry, that does some very good parenting ones that are humorous and touching.

I'm surprised they don't doubt the existence of Anne Frank and/or her family. The holocaust, and Miep Gies, the courageous Dutch lady (born in Vienna), who helped hide Anne, Margot, and the rest from the Nazis. I read the book, Anne Frank Remembered, (several times) written by Miep Gies (probably the woman that I have admired the most in my lifetime).

I can't read or watch anything connected to the Holocaust! The shame is too great!
