Hello, Everyone and Happy New Year

I have to keep this short. I have been gone from here for a long time or at least it seems like a long time. I finally went on my camera safari to Africa in early December. We arrived at the Maasai Mara on December 1. As I remember it, I became ill two days later. (I was like in a fog for several days and have little memory of much of what went on during that time.) After being in the hospital in Kenya for about a week (I think), the doctors diagnosed my condition as having Encephalitis.

After being in the hospital for three and a half weeks, I was able to return to the states via private plane, taken immediately to the hospital nearest to my home by helicopter, placed in quarantine and then was monitored for 72 hours to make sure that I was clear of the disease. I finally was released and able to come back to my own home last Wednesday, December 30. Although the disease is gone, I still suffer the after effects and was told that it may be months until I am really back to being normal again, including getting my memory back.

I just wanted to check in and let everyone know that I didn't just drop out of sight like some other posters do. I thought about you guys during my recovery period and would read some posts now and then, but couldn't really retain much of what I had read. Truthfully, I enjoyed the cartoons mostly. I needed a good laugh now and then. I will tell you more later.

Best wishes for a Happy and Prosperous New Year to each of you.

Oh how lovely to see you back... the last we heard from you was the last week of November when you said you were dealing with some serious personal issues.. and so it was a real concern that you hadn't posted since, and now we learn that after that you have been seriously unwell all of December.. how awful for you and the family...

I'm delighted to see you back you've been missed... and sorry you've been through such an awful time this last couple of months...and hopefully, you will continue on the road to recovery ... Happy New year .. and be well...

I have been waiting for you to return. In your last post, you sounded very unwell. I'm sorry you've been ill, and hope you are better, sooner than later. I knew you wouldn't disappear without a word.

Take care, and all the best to you and your wife in this New Year.

Sending many HUGS!

Oh! I was so worried about you! I am so glad you're back, my dear friend!
Who went with you to Africa? Did your wife go with you?
Stay safe and well.
So sorry your dream of a lifetime turned so tragic.
We will all be awaiting any posts and threads from you! We really missed you!

I've been wondering about you @oldman !

Didn't know you'd been to Africa... I'm so sorry you became ill. What a wonderful trip it could have been but you're better off here at home with us.

My best wishes for quick recovery!

So good to hear from you, and I hope you fully recovery. Happy New Year. 💙

Oh dear Oldman, all that sure will ruin a holiday, I am sorry
to hear that you were so ill in Kenya, but pleased that you
were able to travel back, to your own Doctors, have they
given you a clean bill of health?

Still after all the lying around, you will need to build up your
strength again.

Take it easy for a while and get well, stay safe.

Mike.

I have lost parts of my memory and am trying to piece together what all went on from November 28 until December 18. I just don’t remember much about those three weeks. The doctors told me not to worry about trying to remember the time that I have lost.

Before I left for Africa, I was given vaccines for different illnesses. The lot number of the vaccine for Meningitis was recalled, but the dose I took was skipped over. My brain swelled to the point that I was on death’s doorstep. The doctor had to drill holes in my skull to help relieve the swelling. That’s enough of talking about that.

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and that 2022 will be kind to all of us.

A friend that I was in the Marines with went with me. Lucky for him, he was vaccinated In Tennessee. Yeah, I didn’t get to see much of Africa and can’t remember what I did see. The Neurologist said my memory of those 20 lost days may not return. It’s strange how the brain can pick and chose what it wants to remember.

Thanks for asking. No clean bill of health yet. I have to do some type of rehab and may need at least one more transfusion. I also had an iron infusion to help with recovery, along with a lot of antibiotics given intravenously and other stuff that I don’t know what was in all of those plastic packets of medicines.

@oldman How horrible! Just traced this to read more about what's been happening with you. Am so glad to see from the other "missing members" thread that you are doing much better.
