We are newly retired and going through the adjustment stage. Hard to decide if we should relocate or not. Any thoughts?

Hello SeaBreeze and thank you for responding. We live in a town called Ira , NY located about 30 miles Northwest of Syracuse. It is every bit a bedroom community. We have lived here almost 20 years and have a grand total of maybe 8 friends. We have no real issue with the weather. Our house is very nice and sits on a very nice lot. We have no family close by and our relationship with my kids, particularly my son, is not close. Son lives an hour away daughter 2 1/2 hours away. Of course New York State is a terrible place for retirees due to the tax situation in particular. Our biggest reason to relocate is actually social life. There is basically no senior activities close to us where we can meet other retired people our age. We would love to move to eastern Tennessee. It is a beautiful area but...... We struggle every day making the decision to leave everything we know behind and starting all over. We both agree there is no guarantee things would be different in another place. We are basically seeking a social life to enjoy..

My thought is that you've spent enough time in eastern Tennessee to know whether it suits you and there are retirement communities. If so, then go for it. I think it stays hot longer down there. Wish you good luck!
 
Welcome, rapperray! I live in Florida which is, of course, one of the retiree meccas. Some people retire down here from the North and immediately hate it. Some come down and can't understand why they didn't do it earlier.

Have you checked out to see if there are any retirement communities in your area in New York?
 
Hi Rapperray. Welcome to the forum from Western Pa. . There are several topics to pick from but let me warn u , it can be very addictive. I spend a lot of time on the games so feel free to drop in anytime. Hope you enjoy your time with us.

Hello Jujube...... That is our hangup with relocation.we both agree that initially it would be exciting and New but we wonder if that would wear off and then we would be stuck there knowing absolutely noone.
