For some unknown reason my pc - which includes laptop and connected stand alone keyboard has suddenly started doing "crazy" antics on screen. Pages will appear and disappear - it seems to be selecting at random pages that do exist on the pc but aren't necessarily being used and just throwing them up and interrupting existing works? - just had an idea whilst typing I do sometimes open up a lot of different sites and forget to close them so they are sitting there either below me or elsewhere and they are often the ones that pop up. Maybe an cluttered pc?? any clues??

You didn't mention using a wireless mouse, so my guess is you're using the laptop trackpad.
May be time for a cleaning. The trackpad may respond better if it can more accurately detect your fingers or can stop registering debris as a legitimate touch.
Stay on Track: How to Fix a Jumpy or Inaccurate Laptop Trackpad

Most laptops, the trackpad can be disabled. Would be nice if you could hook up a wireless mouse and disable the trackpad to rule out the trackpad as the culprit.

sorry wireless mouse - he had escaped for a moment!! ok next objective "how to disable the trackpad - although I must admit I never go near it??

At the top row of the laptop keyboard, usually on the left side, there may be a key ... possibly a function (FN) key to disable the trackpad.
If you don't have manuals on hand for your laptop, try google the laptop name and model number and how to disable the trackpad.

As mentioned, the trackpad could have some debris that it's registering as a legitimate touch. On the other hand, that wireless mouse could need some cleaning.

In fact, disconnect the wireless mouse and use the trackpad. See if the problem goes away.
That would let you know if the wireless mouse is the problem or not.

EDIT: I wonder too if weak batteries in a wireless mouse might cause wonky things. Dunno

Assuming you've already rebooted the laptop and it's still misbehaving, try disconnecting the standalone keyboard and see that helps.

thank you both for your help fellas - much appreciated - will let you know in time - may take time too!!

ps: I do so miss the laptops that had movable trays for playing dvd's and reading other discs - I imagine you can still purchase them at a premium?
