Helping Our Wild Deer Friend Eva

Amazing video...I can equate. While I've never had a deer lie quietly like this, we have had several incidents at our place in the country where the deer approached quite close. They are used to us, and roam our yard freely. When I'm out puttering around the yard, it is not unusual to see a couple watching what I'm doing, or following me around in the woods behind my tractor. We had one who, as a young fawn, would come up the steps on the back deck, and look through the storm door to see what we were doing...he kept that up as he grew...even to the point where he became a mature buck...we named him "Curious George".

I hunted for a couple of years when we first moved down here, but anymore I enjoy watching them, more than hunting. The only problem we have is keeping them out of the garden, but I use a couple of sensor controlled sprinklers that give them a good noisy shot of water when they approach the garden, and that seems to suffice.

The last time I shot a deer was a couple of years ago. One morning I saw one laying along the road...it had been hit by a car sometime the previous night. When I went over to check on it, it was still breathing, but had sustained major damage to its rear quarters. I went back to the house, got a pistol, and ended its suffering.
