Sorry ladies,,but a lot of women only know ,turn on key, step on gas or brake,, turn signals ,,or lights.

Before you all jump on me about that sentence,,, think .

How much do you know about your car?

Its time that someone makes a good video about what to look for when buying a car.
Having been involved with checking over cars before sending them back on the road .

Most states do a safely inspection once or twice a year.
Engine ,oil belts , seem to be missed over .
 
That’s why I have an honest and trustworthy mechanic. If whoever I'm buying from isn’t willing to allow my mechanic to inspect the vehicle, then I’m no longer interested in the purchase. I suspect I’ve saved many thousands of dollars over the years!
 
silverfox... totally agree with you on ladies & cars. i'll come to your defense. no stats to present, but think i'm safe in saying average woman probably doesn't know a lot of info about that car she drives.

when i got my driver's permit, dad had some of his own requirements. we had to put big hulkin' snow tires on/off, depending on when your birthday fell. could i do it today? HELL no, but could tell someone how to do it to perfection.

first time we ever had more than one car was when i was in college. one of dad's co-workers told him it would run "forever" as long as you changed the oil and spark plugs... so we learned how to check/add oil, change oil/filter, gap/change.

here in NJ, we're not allowed topump our own gas! a few years ago was planning a roadtrip from NJ to WV. car was an "04 but ran smooth as silk. i had a "milk crate" with some essentials.... a few quarts of oil (with funnel), coolant, windshield wash. i checked the oil level and air in tires.
filled the tank with gas and set out at the crack of dawn the next morning. at one point in the drive (about 250 miles into 350 total), there's a stretch... maybe 4-5 miles... very steep climbs and rapid WHEEEE down-hill. my 4 cylinder hyundai was SCREAMING at about 2/3 up the first hill. all the tractor trailers were crawling upt that lane meant just for them.

THEN the "check engine" light came on and thought it was having a seizure! once i rolled over first crest, everything went back to perfect... until hill number two! i was waiting for the car to literally explode at any minute. the rest of the drive had a lot of altitude but nothing like those hills.

this long story is getting LONG! seems most likely reason for CE light to come on is gas cap that isn't tightened.

i went to college in the Poconos of PA. generally significant snowage. now a VW beetle ALWAYS started on first try no matter how cold it was. problem was, that car was so light, it quickly got hung up in deeper snow. being college students... nobody had a shovel. parking was NOT "reserved". i got one of 2 alley spots before snow started falling. in the morning, probably 6-8" on ground. muscle car of one of guys next door... wouldn't start.

so being college students and geniuses... we concocted a plan. i sat in running (warm) car while guys cleared some in front. 4 other people squeezed into VW & i went as fast as i could, as far as i could... into soft snow so no chance to do any damage. then those 4 hunks od ballast gout out and help me back up and cleared a little more of the alley. then hit the gass... and repeat. it was fun and without this brilliant plan, everybody would have been stuck in the alley.

oh... one problem. all that lunacy threw car out of alignment!!! luckily it was not a huge repair and i never told dad how it happened!
