Vala, looked at your profile and see you've been to Kenya and Botswana. We lived in Uganda for two years. Africa gets in your blood, doesn't it? :)

Ameriscot, Yes, but not as much as the rain forest. It was wonderful, laying on the hammock deck with a good book. You could hear the rain coming, then it was there along with the mosquitoes seeking shelter. I could have done without the mosquitoes. The American doctor living there said in one of her newsletter that she spent new years eve at the brewery on the Amazon River with the villagers, I was so envious. When we visited the brewery on our tour, they set out 7 glasses of booze each with different type of brew. My first thought was WOW 20 some people are going to share one glass. After the first taste I thought, it's okay, no germ can live on these glasses. I wanted to go back to the rainforest one more time but the Zoo stopped going there and I did not want to go alone.

Holly thank you for the comments about the scooters. When he discharged (WW II), he rode a bus to another town and bought an Indian and rode it home. He had never been on a motorcycle before. He loved working with his hands and was a perfectionist with his scooters. I thought of him as a city boy born on a farm. He was 2nd generation Swedish.

Lee, I have enjoyed the Stargate series over and over. Teal'c is man of few word and serious so when I saw him laughing in the bonus features I laughed out loud. I cancelled cable TV and started buying movies that I liked which included several series. I have around 400 movies, old and new. I am into fantasy's now. I especially like Lord of the Rings and the bonus features were as good as the movie.

Haven't been to South America but have heard from others who loved the rainforests.

Thank you shedevil.

Ameriscot, I met an American doctor there. She went on vacation like I did and she did not want to go home, she loved the place. The lodge let her have two rooms, one for an office and the other for sleeping quarters. She ate in the dining room. She had been there about 13 years when I was there in 1999 I think. On a trip back to the states she went on a radio talk show about living Peru and helping the natives. The rotary club heard her and visited the lodge. They ended up building her a clinic and housing for families of patients. Later they built her a home and put down a well for her. They have had to move her clinic because the Amazon River getting closer and closer. She sends out very interesting newsletters. Oh, when she was on the talk show, a publisher called her and asked if she kept a journal. She ended up writing a book called "La Doctora. Her jungle home.

Fascinating! We met many volunteers who went home early and who extended. We also know serial volunteers. 2 years in one country. 2 years in another. Etc. We loved Uganda's but 2 years was enough. We do go back and visit.

When I broke my arm in 3 places, I had 3 months in therapy. The therapist recommend a massage by one of their employees daughter. I had a few and got to know the masseuse well. I told her about my travels and she said he was planning to do that. I said you need to do it before you marry and have children. I did not know she was engaged. She broke her engagement, found a job in Korea as a teacher, from there she hit the road with what savings she had. She kept in contact with her former customers and friends by email, then a blog the last time I heard from her she was in China with a male friend. They worked when they needed money, no telling where she is now. I lost the blog address after she set it up.
