I am Vala from the midwest. I am a widow who loves books, movies, jigsaw puzzles, travel and this machine, especially this machine. It has been cold and wet here and we really appreciate the wet part. Thank you all for allowing me to be here.
Ameriscot, Yes, but not as much as the rain forest. It was wonderful, laying on the hammock deck with a good book. You could hear the rain coming, then it was there along with the mosquitoes seeking shelter. I could have done without the mosquitoes. The American doctor living there said in one of her newsletter that she spent new years eve at the brewery on the Amazon River with the villagers, I was so envious. When we visited the brewery on our tour, they set out 7 glasses of booze each with different type of brew. My first thought was WOW 20 some people are going to share one glass. After the first taste I thought, it's okay, no germ can live on these glasses. I wanted to go back to the rainforest one more time but the Zoo stopped going there and I did not want to go alone.
Holly thank you for the comments about the scooters. When he discharged (WW II), he rode a bus to another town and bought an Indian and rode it home. He had never been on a motorcycle before. He loved working with his hands and was a perfectionist with his scooters. I thought of him as a city boy born on a farm. He was 2nd generation Swedish.
Thank you shedevil.
Ameriscot, I met an American doctor there. She went on vacation like I did and she did not want to go home, she loved the place. The lodge let her have two rooms, one for an office and the other for sleeping quarters. She ate in the dining room. She had been there about 13 years when I was there in 1999 I think. On a trip back to the states she went on a radio talk show about living Peru and helping the natives. The rotary club heard her and visited the lodge. They ended up building her a clinic and housing for families of patients. Later they built her a home and put down a well for her. They have had to move her clinic because the Amazon River getting closer and closer. She sends out very interesting newsletters. Oh, when she was on the talk show, a publisher called her and asked if she kept a journal. She ended up writing a book called "La Doctora. Her jungle home.
