I think it is misunderstood. This is simply fashion designers displaying their ideas and egos on the catwalk. It may have no immediate connection with everyday clothing, but the idea of using different materials in different ways might be adapted to mainstream fashion.
It's a bit like space technology being adapted to be used in modern cars and trucks.

I don't know about high fashion, but I've been having problems getting new pants. The current fad/fashion is the "slim fit" look, and tapered pants. It cracks me up when I see a pair of XXXL pants that's "slim fit' and tapered. I remember when I had a closet full of paisley shirts and bell bottoms.
