High Heat and Bad Air Quality

Bad Air Day
Air Quality and Your Health

NIH, government website

The combination of high temperatures, few winds and breezes, pollution and airborne particles can brew up an unhealthful mixture in the air, just waiting to enter your lungs. These substances can make it hard to breathe and can sap your energy. If the air quality is especially poor, it may take a few days for your body to recover. And if you’re regularly exposed to high levels of unhealthy air, the health consequences can linger for months or even years.

With fire season just getting started, in the Western States, there will be many areas that are quite "smoky". Couple that with the air pollution in many of the larger population centers, and breathing that "muck" is certainly unhealthy. If I lived in such an area, I would consider wearing a Covid mask.

I stayed out as long as I could, but the air is awful. Plus, the landscapers are here today and their machines are making me ill, so, back indoors.

yes, and definitely using an air filter in the house. We have a good one, works well for pollen and for smoke when the neighbors BBQ...

and it cost only about $40.

If I lived in an area that was really bad, that had a constantly smoke filled sky and the air always looked like fog?

I would really, really, try to leave the air for a few months until it cleared up some. You can inhale smoke like that for a couple of hours without too much trouble, but beyond that, very unhealthy. Even healthy people can develop real problems from that and even asthma.

Thank you for posting this Jon. I was going to go to the park in Hoboken on Friday but the Accuweather app listed the air quality as Poor. Then I realized it was very humid and rain was forecast for later in the day, probably after I would have gotten back home. But with those two things I didn't want to chance it.

Summer can be deadly for older adults

"In extreme heat, the body must work extra hard to maintain a healthy temperature. Older adults are at higher risk for heat stroke, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and other serious health issues due to poorer circulation and less effective sweating that comes with aging. Medical conditions like heart disease and side effects from various medications can compound these risks, reports Efrem Castillo in the Times of San Diego."
