Last couple weeks, large California waves have been national news. Blacks Beach is in Torrey Pines north of La Jolla that is north of San Diego.
The below 23 minute Youtube video from a couple weeks ago provides a pretty good feel for what its like to be a hard core surfer. The two guys being filmed don't actually get in the ocean till the 10 minute point. Before that is just a lot of bro culture stuff beginning in their surf shop looking at their extra long boards for the occasion. One reason I like the way this was filmed is they had some excellent zoomed in video camera work providing a close-up feel in the large waves.

Also amazing are all the dolphins playing in the waves with the surfers. The below 2011 video better shows how the dolphins surf waves. At the point the waves begin to topple over, they shoot up into the air then onto the backside of waves. Obviously for the fun thrill just like we humans.
