History Repeats Itself (Wearing Masks in 1918, Pictures)

I find that interesting. With so many dying back then, I am kind of surprised that more people didn’t want to stay home.
Well, back then if you stayed home, you starved. Plus no mass media, they didn’t know how bad it was.

Yeah, OK, I get that. So back then, you had a choice. Go to work and eat, but maybe die from the flu or stay home and maybe die from starvation. (lol)

There is plenty of evidence that as the Spanish Flu became widespread, schools were closed as were movie theaters, lodge meetings and other public gatherings. People were instructed to wear masks and stay home. Unfortunately, the US government lied and minimized the danger, making the pandemic more deadly than it might have otherwise been. You can Google it.

Here's a good place to get some info. It's an interview with John M. Barry, who wrote the definitive work on the Spanish Flu epidemic and is a widely acknowledged expert on that pandemic. I read the book over five years ago. It's well worth the time.

There was no internet back then. No government bailouts. No way to get food without going out. No way to get money without working for it. All 4 of my grandparents lived through it and told me about it when I was a kid. Didn't your grandparents live through that time?

My grandparents never mentioned the Spanish flu, however I heard many stories about the depression. I think the depression, for the people living back then, was the bigger deal. At least in my family, idk about others

I suppose they did, but they never spoke about it.
