To some degree, it can be a matter of perspective. In the American south, there were references to the Civil War as "the war of northern aggression." Some unflappable Brits supposedly referred to WWII as "the unpleasantness in Europe." "Reframing" can be done by nations as well as individuals, and history, so they say, is written by the victors or those who prevail. The vanquished, not so much...then there are the conspiracy theorists, who can twist, torture, or fabricate "facts" to conform to personal beliefs...
